April Cannon, EEP

I’m April Cannon—an energy efficiency project manager and business developer, city councilor, event planner, and proud Midwesterner with a heart rooted in Southern Indiana. After spending 13 years in Lexington, Kentucky and living overseas and in several places in between, I now call Banks, Oregon home. I’m 38 years old, and while I don’t have biological children, I’m incredibly lucky to have Amaiya, my kindhearted and talented 17-year-old bonus daughter who inspires me every day.
I live with my best friend and fiancé, Stephen, and our three spoiled rotten dogs—Bear, Hardy Joe, and Forest—who keep life joyful and chaotic in the best way. I thrive in controlled chaos, and I find peace in the wild: surrounded by plants, animals, fresh air, and water. Whether I’m kayaking, hiking, or just soaking up the sun with a board game in hand, peace is my sanctuary.
Professionally, I wear many hats. I lead innovative energy programs through ASK Energy Inc., serve my community as a city councilor, and help shape inclusive, impactful initiatives that empower others. I’m a fixer by nature—driven by a deep desire to help people, solve problems, and create spaces where everyone feels seen and valued. I believe in leading with empathy, laughing often, and never underestimating the power of a well-timed cinnamon roll.
Currently, I’m in the midst of planning our wedding for March 2026! It’s a celebration of everything we cherish—love, humor, family, peace, and animals. Event planning is one of my passions, and this one is especially close to my heart.
Above all, I believe success is about connection—building relationships, lifting others up, and staying true to who you are. I’m grateful for every chapter of my journey and excited for what’s next.

What do you attribute your success to?
My success is rooted in the unwavering support and love I’ve received from the incredible people in my life. I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by a village that has lifted me up, believed in me, and reminded me of my strength even when I doubted it myself. My fiancé, Stephen, is my rock—his encouragement, humor, and belief in me have helped me be brave in moments that felt overwhelming. My dad, Matt, taught me the value of hard work and integrity, and my Aunt Becky has always been a source of wisdom and unconditional love. I’m also grateful for my amazing circle of friends and family who show up for me in ways big and small, reminding me that I’m never alone in this journey. Professionally, I’ve had the privilege of working with brilliant, generous mentors and colleagues who’ve taught me lessons you can’t find in a textbook or podcast—lessons about leadership, empathy, resilience, and the power of community. Their guidance has shaped not just my career, but the kind of person I strive to be. Because of all this support, I’ve learned to be courageous, to trust my instincts, and to believe in my ability to make a difference. My story is not just mine—it’s a reflection of the love, mentorship, and encouragement I’ve received. And if I can pass even a fraction of that on to others, then I know I’m doing something right.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received came from my former supervisor and now colleague, Tina. In 2023, during a time when I was feeling completely overwhelmed and questioning my own abilities, she looked at me and said, “Focus on what you’re good at, and the rest will fall into place.” It was simple, but it hit me like a lightning bolt. That moment shifted everything for me. Instead of trying to be perfect at everything, I leaned into my strengths—my organization and PM skills, my empathy, my ability to connect with people and lead with heart. And when I tell you it worked, I mean it. Just look at all I’ve accomplished since then! Tina’s words reminded me that success isn’t about doing it all—it’s about doing you well. That advice gave me permission to trust myself, and it’s something I carry with me every day. It’s also something I try to pass on to others: when you feel lost, start with what you know you’re great at. The rest will follow.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Believe in your voice and your value. This industry—and the world—needs your perspective, your passion, and your leadership. When you're feeling overwhelmed, remember what my former supervisor Tina told me during one of my hardest moments: “Focus on what you’re good at, and the rest will fall into place.” That advice changed everything for me. Lean into your strengths, surround yourself with people who lift you up, and never be afraid to take up space. You are more capable than you know, and your journey is just beginning.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Right now, one of the greatest opportunities in the energy efficiency space is the chance to center equity while driving meaningful change. As we help businesses and communities become more energy-conscious, we also have a responsibility to ensure that these solutions are accessible and inclusive. On the flip side, a major challenge is balancing business development with personal development—especially for those of us in consulting roles. It’s easy to get caught up in deliverables and deadlines, but the real growth happens when we invest in people, relationships, and our own learning. When we prioritize empathy, mentorship, and equity alongside technical expertise, we create a stronger, more sustainable future for everyone.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, growth, and love are my north stars. I believe in adding real value—whether it’s through meaningful work, empowering others, or simply making someone laugh with a well-timed dad joke (I’m a big fan). My fiancé Stephen, my family, friends, and 3 pups remind me daily that relationships matter more than titles, and that life is better when you’re surrounded by people who cheer you on. I value hard work, but I also fiercely protect my work-life balance—because some of my best ideas come while hiking, gardening, or just sitting outside with a cup of coffee and a dog snoring nearby. I strive to live fully, lead with empathy, and be part of something great… ideally with snacks.
