Her Story

About April

I've been in my field for about 20 years, and it all started because I like helping people and solving problems. It kind of just went hand-in-hand to become a consultant and life coach. I helped out a couple of my friends, and that's how it actually started, and then it grew into what it became, and then I started consulting for Fortune 100 companies. My main areas of expertise are business consulting and creating trainings for companies, which we also instruct. We also have a leadership training that we've created that's ours, and we'll go to different companies and do either seminars or webinars, whatever is convenient for the client. In my typical day, I handle everything - emails, dealing with the clients, creating the trainings. Right now, we're putting together a nonprofit that's going to be touching on a few different areas, and we also created our AI training, so we're getting that going. I just got a contract with Texas A&M, which I find kind of crazy because my stepmother who passed away in 2012 was a big Aggies fan, and me being from Austin, you know, we're UT. So now I'm consulting for Texas A&M, and I think about her every time. But what I love more than anything is that I just get to help people. I get to see people grow their businesses and become successful, and know that I played a little part in that.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with April

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my daughter. I mean, I came from absolutely nothing, and I've built everything on my own. I'd like to say that I'm self-made, but I don't really believe in that. I think that everybody has had some help along the way, whether it's somebody just giving them a smile and making their day better. I tell my daughter all the time, it costs nothing to be kind, but it could cost everything to not be kind. So my daughter, and me. I mean, I deserve more, and I'm worthy of happiness and success. And so I gotta remind myself of that, because sometimes I forget. I always put me last. I had legal custodial guardianship of my brother and sister when I turned 18, so I've always been taking care of somebody, so to take care of me is kind of weird.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to take the cotton out of my ears and put it in my mouth. Listen. The first one to speak loses, so the power of knowing when to shut up. Just be quiet and listen. I think that's the best advice I've gotten.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are helping people and kindness. I tell my daughter all the time, it costs nothing to be kind, but it could cost everything to not be kind. I'm a huge supporter of women, and I feel it's super important to build women up, for us to help each other out instead of dragging each other down. I've raised a daughter, she's 21, she's fabulous, absolutely amazing, and I wake up every morning wanting to be a better person because of her, so I try to lead by example.
