Ten minutes with Arlene
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my strong sense of self-motivation, perseverance, and commitment to continuous growth. Raising a large family has strengthened my ability to lead, adapt, and remain dedicated to my goals. The experiences and responsibilities that come with supporting my six children and a growing extended family have shaped my resilience, work ethic, and determination. These qualities have carried over into my professional life, inspiring me to continue making a positive impact in the healthcare industry and contribute to meaningful improvements for future generations.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice is that nursing encompasses far more than bedside care. There are numerous facets of health care beyond direct patient interaction, each offering unique opportunities to contribute to the well-being of individuals and communities. These areas can include research, education, administration, policy development, and consulting, among others. Recognizing the breadth of the profession can inspire nurses to explore diverse career paths, such as consulting, where their expertise can influence systems, improve processes, and enhance overall patient outcomes.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the nursing and healthcare industry is to recognize that nursing offers a wide range of opportunities beyond bedside care. While direct patient care is a valuable and rewarding foundation, the profession extends into leadership, education, consulting, technology, compliance, administration, and many other areas. I encourage new graduates to explore the many paths available, continue learning, and remain open to opportunities that allow them to use their clinical knowledge and skills in new and impactful ways. Nursing is a profession with endless possibilities, and your career can evolve in directions you may not have initially imagined.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The home health and hospice industry is experiencing significant challenges, but it also presents tremendous opportunities for innovation, education, and improvement. I have always been motivated to help strengthen this field by identifying solutions, sharing knowledge, and finding new ways to make a meaningful impact. This passion led me to author The Survey Trainer, published through Decision Health, which provides valuable guidance to healthcare organizations navigating compliance and survey readiness. I am also continuing to contribute to the industry through two additional books currently in development that will be available on Amazon, with the goal of empowering healthcare professionals and advancing excellence in home-based care.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are faith, trust, and a commitment to making a positive difference. I believe that things unfold the way they are meant to and that every experience provides an opportunity for growth and purpose. Throughout my career, my guiding goal has been to leave the home health and hospice industry better than I found it by sharing knowledge, supporting others, and helping advance standards of care. I remain committed to making a meaningful impact and contributing to a stronger future for the professionals and patients who rely on this important field.
