Her Story
About Armetta
My career journey really started when I was still in college and attended the New Leadership Texas program, a summer institute originally from Rutgers University. There I met so many influential women doing things I didn't even know were possible and talking about topics ranging from gender parity to other issues that no one was discussing in my small rural community. That experience motivated me to go back to my college campus and found my own student organization called WISE, which stands for Women In Search of Equality. I also founded a local Ignite chapter on campus and continued organizing throughout my undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Tyler, where I earned my Bachelor's of Arts in English with a minor in Political Science. Because of all my time organizing, I built a really strong network that helped me land my first nonprofit role at the national organization Vote, Run, Lead around 2016, while I was still in college. From there, I worked for various nonprofits at the local, statewide, and national levels before getting into the campaign side of things. My first campaign was actually working for Jasmine Crockett's opponent, Lorraine Beerabil, who ran in HD100 in Dallas. After that, I worked on Tom Steyer's 2020 campaign and later on one of the Houston mayoral races before coming to Contest Every Race, where I currently work. I've been in this field for about 13 years now, and my main area of expertise is civic engagement and community organizing. On a typical day, especially during election season, I'm overwhelmingly busy with meetings, trainings, preparations for outreach, and research. When it's not an election cycle, I focus on research, project management, community communication, and cross-departmental collaboration, all to help support great candidates running across the country.

The best career advice I've ever received would probably be, if there isn't a seat at the table, you make your own seat at the table. You just make a seat.
