About Arpita
Arpita Shalini is a geospatial science professional with a focus on mapping and satellite imagery applications. She has been working in the field for about five years, following completion of her bachelor's and master's degrees in geographic information science. Her work involves using satellite data to address client needs in the utility and oil and gas industries, such as identifying suitable areas for project expansion and detecting methane over infrastructure. Arpita has long been interested in space-related fields, having aspired to work with satellites and astronauts since childhood. She previously volunteered with the Women in GIS team during her graduate studies. Arpita credits her parents and husband for motivating her toward challenging opportunities and takes pride in helping to build a team of women in her previously male-prevalent workplace.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Arpita
01What do you attribute your success to?
My parents and my husband are great motivators who push me towards more challenging things even on bad days. Having family around is like a backbone. I also attribute it to creating space for females in a male-prevalent area, as when I joined my current team there were only two females and now we are all females.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just don't be afraid. Things could look overwhelming at the start, but don't be afraid, do it. What's the worst that could happen? The other person would say no, but at least you would have tried. Think of the opportunities you don't proceed for.
