Her Story
About Ashley
Ashley Garcia serves as a tenured professor at Santa Rosa Junior College, an Hispanic Serving Institution in Sonoma County, California. She has been teaching since 2013, including her graduate student years, and primarily instructs courses in public speaking with special topics sections focused on social justice advocacy and sports. Garcia also teaches intercultural communication, critical thinking and argumentation, and debate, drawing from her research interests in sport and social movements. After initially planning to attend law school with a dual degree in criminal justice and communication, she shifted her path following an intercultural communication class and went on to earn a master's degree and a PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is most proud of receiving the Gerald Miller Award from the National Communication Association for her dissertation, which recognized her rhetorical scholarship. Garcia is a lifetime member of the National Communication Association and a member of the Rhetoric Society of America, and she participates in the pastoral assembly at her church where she lectures.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't give up. If you're really passionate about what you want to do, make it happen. Don't let others tell you you can't, don't let yourself buy the outside narrative of like a woman can't do it or a woman of color can't do it.
