Her Story

About Ashley

Ashley Koikas serves as Shift Director and Nursing Supervisor at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center, where she oversees hospital operations during off-shift hours, managing patient throughput, staffing, emergency response, and real-time problem-solving across multiple departments. With 16 years of experience in healthcare and more than a decade in supervisory leadership, she brings a systems-thinking approach to complex healthcare operations, patient safety, and organizational improvement. Her professional foundation was shaped by her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from York College of Pennsylvania and her early experience in toxicology critical care, which strengthened her clinical expertise and ability to navigate high-acuity environments.

Koikas attributes her success to resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to step into challenging opportunities early in her career. Her ability to embrace difficult roles and learn through experience helped her become the youngest supervisor at her hospital, an achievement that reflected both her determination and leadership potential. Throughout her career, she has developed a reputation for remaining composed in complex situations, identifying operational challenges, and translating them into opportunities for improvement. Her leadership philosophy is grounded in service to others, building trust with staff, and balancing hands-on support with strategic oversight to promote both team success and high-quality patient care.

In recognition of her leadership and commitment to healthcare excellence, Koikas received the Leadership and Integrity Award in 2024, followed by the Spring Leadership DAISY Award and a nomination for the Maryland State DAISY Award. She is also expanding her professional focus into medical record review and legal nurse consulting, with interests in case analysis, timeline development, patient safety, risk analysis, and healthcare systems improvement. Through her leadership, clinical experience, and commitment to continuous learning, Koikas continues to make a meaningful impact on healthcare operations, staff development, and patient outcomes.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ashley

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to step outside of my comfort zone and embrace fear. Early in my career, I often had to prove myself, which taught me the importance of perseverance and confidence. Learning how to pivot, navigate challenges, and trust myself has ultimately made my work easier and helped me grow into the professional I am today.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to always trust their instincts, lead with confidence and kindness, and maintain a genuine service-to-others mentality. I also encourage them to embrace challenges and do the difficult things early in their careers, because stepping outside of their comfort zones and facing challenges head-on builds confidence, resilience, and the skills needed for long-term success.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are family, focus, positivity, and faith. Family is my number one priority and provides the foundation that keeps me grounded. I also believe in staying focused, maintaining a positive outlook, and having faith that, even when challenges arise, things will ultimately work out.
