Her Story

About Ashley

I've always known I wanted to help people and that I really enjoyed policy and government, feeling strongly that those things should serve as a help to people rather than a hindrance. Throughout my career, I've had the wonderful opportunity to travel while helping and advocating for those who do not have voices, working to keep government and policies in check to alleviate the suffering of our most vulnerable populations and help create a good society. My work in social policy consulting involved day-to-day activities like reaching out to and interviewing stakeholders, attending various conferences, and interviewing people on the ground so I could draft policy recommendations with evidence and research from the people themselves while implementing these policies. I also served as an elected official on our town's city council. Among my most notable achievements, I wrote a white paper examining the childcare situation in New York State, and the following year, multiple millions of dollars more were spent towards childcare. I also drafted a regional safety net analysis that brought all the stakeholders in the whole upstate region of New York State together to help our most vulnerable and get a bird's-eye view of all available services. This analysis led to a multi-year initiative and helped secure further funding through federal and state grants as well as nonprofits and foundations. I'm currently not working as I stepped away to raise my children.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I have a very strong belief in God, and I truly believe that He sent everyone on Earth to have a unique mission and purpose within their lives. I feel that part of my mission is to help and empower people to reach their dreams. I also believe very strongly that a rising tide lifts all boats, and so I feel very strongly that if you help others to succeed, it doesn't take away from your success. I believe that everybody can succeed together.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Somebody once told me that there are certain fields that have very specific career trajectories, like in the medical field where you receive certain certifications and schooling, get a certain license, and are placed in the career force. Others, including the social sciences and liberal arts, do not have a specific career trajectory. With that comes much creativity, but also a lot of responsibility to kind of make your own path. That really reverberated with me because after I graduated with my degree, I knew I loved what I was studying and I knew I really wanted to help people, but it was almost like, now what? When I heard that the social sciences isn't as regimented as others, I realized I have the power to make this, to make my career what I want it to be. After I felt empowered, I felt empowered to kind of go for what I wanted and figure out how to brand myself what I wanted to be.
