Her Story
About Ashley
Ashley is a nonprofit executive, breast cancer advocate, and community leader dedicated to improving access to early detection, education, and support services for individuals affected by breast cancer. As Executive Director of Check for a Lump, she leads one of Arizona’s most impactful breast health organizations, overseeing programs that provide free mammograms, breast health education, wigs and resources to people in Arizona. Since officially joining the organization’s leadership in 2020 and advancing from Director of Development to Executive Director, Ashley has played a key role in expanding the organization's reach, strengthening community partnerships, and increasing awareness about the lifesaving importance of early detection. Ashley’s passion for advocacy is deeply personal. As a breast cancer survivor, she understands firsthand the challenges individuals face throughout diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Her experience has fueled her commitment to ensuring that everyone—regardless of background, income, or circumstance—has access to the screenings and healthcare resources they need. She is a vocal advocate for cancer awareness and policy initiatives that promote early detection, including support for multi-cancer screening legislation and expanded access to preventive healthcare services. Through her leadership, Check for a Lump continues to make a measurable impact in the fight against breast cancer across Arizona and beyond. Outside of her professional responsibilities, Ashley remains committed to causes that support breast cancer patients, survivors, and children's nonprofits. A lifelong lover of the arts, she continues to take adult ballet classes twice a week, describing dance as both a creative outlet and a form of personal therapy that helps her maintain balance and perspective. She also treasures spending time with her family, especially her adult daughter, as well as close friends who enrich her life. Guided by compassion, resilience, and a belief in the power of community, Ashley strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others every day.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Ashley
01What do you attribute your success to?
My commitment to service and professional dedication is deeply rooted in my upbringing, which emphasized the importance of giving back, pursuing meaningful work, and cultivating strength and independence from an early age. While such values may be instilled in many, I believe my enduring drive to help others stems not only from that foundation but also from a genuine, internal passion for service. This sense of purpose is ingrained in who I am, and I consistently seek opportunities to contribute in tangible ways.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Probably the best advice I ever got was that you don't always have to give 100%. Eighty percent is totally okay. I know that might sound a little counterintuitive, but if you're constantly going full throttle, burnout is inevitable. It's about pacing yourself and recognizing that sustainability matters more than intensity in the long run.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to make self-care a priority and remember that you don't have to push yourself to the limit every single day. It's okay to pace yourself because when you take care of yourself first, you're in a much better position to show up for others and do your best work over the long haul.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge right now is funding. We work in a complex with a lot of other nonprofits, and everyone is facing the same issue, funding is down, donations are down. That said, there are always opportunities and room for growth, even in tough times. It's really about finding creative ways to adapt and making the most of the resources we do have.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me are respect, honesty, and compassion.
