Her Story
About Ashley
A typical day for me starts with checking my emails, which are typically quite a few from the previous day and maybe the morning, to get a good sense of what our priority emails must respond to. Then I look at my calendar to see what's the priority meetings. At this point in the business, having been in business for 17 years, I spend 60% of my time on sales and development, so I'm working on the business, not in the business. I'm meeting with prospects, I'm networking, I'm working on proposals, and I'm working on discovery to help me develop new strategies to go after new business or to help increase and expand our work with existing clients. The other 40% of my work is typically spent on strategy, so I'm looking at our clients' goals, their barriers, their roadblocks, and opportunities to help them reach their goals according to their annual business objectives. No two days are ever the same. I'm usually in meetings, sometimes I'm on set at a TV station, and oftentimes I'm behind my desk, creating real tactics that our clients can implement. The way that my personality is designed, I could not work in a field that was not as spontaneous and creative as ours.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I really wanted to have an HBCU experience, and I attribute a good amount of my success to my experience at Texas Southern University. At that college, I felt that I really had hands-on experience from my advisors, one of whom is now my mentor. Through that opportunity, being a student at TSU was how I actually was introduced to the Houston Chronicle, which was my first job out of college.
