About Ashley

Ashley Trahan is the Deputy Executive Director at the Housing Authority of the City of Bastrop in Bastrop, Texas, where she oversees public housing and Section 8 programs serving low-income families, seniors, and individuals in need of stable housing. In her leadership role, she manages housing operations, financial oversight, tenant case management, and community outreach efforts. She is dedicated to ensuring that families have access to safe, sanitary, and affordable housing while connecting them to resources that support long-term stability and self-sufficiency. Ashley began her career in civil and community-focused work in 2015, spending years in ministry supporting women recovering from drug addiction. This experience shaped her passion for advocacy and service, as she worked closely with individuals rebuilding their lives and finding renewed purpose. She later transitioned into the affordable housing sector about six years ago, bringing her commitment to empowerment and community support into public service administration. In her current role, Ashley is recognized for her hands-on leadership and comprehensive approach to housing management, including budget oversight, tenant advocacy, and program administration. She has helped guide the Housing Authority toward high performance outcomes and expanded support initiatives, including homeownership programs that allow families to transition from rental assistance to long-term financial independence. She is also active in community service through organizations such as the High Grove Cemetery Association, Adult and Teen Challenge of Texas, and Type 1 Diabetes Foundation initiatives, reflecting her broader commitment to community development and advocacy.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ashley

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success primarily to persistence. When I didn’t have all the answers, I remained committed to learning and improving rather than giving up. I also credit my community and professional network for playing a key role in my growth, as support from family, colleagues, and mentors has helped me gain insight and stay motivated. Ultimately, I believe success comes from staying persistent through challenges, seeking solutions when needed, and continuing to move forward even when circumstances are difficult.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to do everything with excellence, regardless of the role or title. I’ve learned that you don’t have to be the smartest person in the room or hold a prestigious position to make an impact—what matters is the commitment you bring to every task. From my earliest jobs, to where I am today, I’ve approached each opportunity with the same level of dedication and excellence. Over time, I’ve found that strong work ethic is recognized, leads to new opportunities, and becomes the foundation for continued growth and success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice would be to not wait until you feel completely ready. If you're passionate about your industry and have a goal you want to pursue, go for it. The truth is, many of us never feel 100% ready when new opportunities arise.

Don't underestimate yourself or let self-doubt hold you back. You can continue building your knowledge, gaining experience, and adding qualifications along the way. Growth happens through action, not by waiting for the perfect moment.

Most importantly, stay persistent. There will be challenges and setbacks, but don't let them discourage you. Keep moving forward, keep learning, and don't give up when things get hard. Often, success comes from simply having the courage to start and the determination to keep going.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges we face right now is funding. Limited funding through HUD impacts our ability to assist everyone in our community who needs housing support. At a time when homelessness and housing instability continue to affect so many individuals and families, the demand for assistance often exceeds the resources available. Increased funding would allow us to expand our reach and help more people access safe, stable housing.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is the value that guides both my professional and personal life. I believe in being honest, accountable, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching. For me, integrity means ensuring that my actions align with my values and that my decisions are made with genuine intentions. I also believe in leading with a kind and sincere heart, treating others with respect, and setting a positive example for those around me. As a parent, I strive to instill these same values in my children, encouraging them to act with honesty, compassion, and character in everything they do. Integrity and confidence go hand in hand. When you know you are acting with authenticity and purpose, it creates a strong foundation for decision-making, leadership, and meaningful relationships. These principles shape how I show up every day, both personally and professionally.
