Her Story

About Ashley

Ashley Van Vuuren is a seasoned healthcare and pharmaceutical professional who serves as a Field Reimbursement Manager – CAR-T at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine. With more than 13 years of experience in oncology and more than a decade specializing in field reimbursement, she has built her career around helping healthcare providers and patients navigate complex access and reimbursement processes. Her career began in the medical field, first working within the payer environment before transitioning to the provider side and ultimately into the pharmaceutical industry. This progression has given her a broad understanding of healthcare reimbursement, including payer requirements, billing, coding, prior authorization, patient affordability, and market access. In addition to her current role as a CAR-T Field Reimbursement Manager, Ashley also serves as a national trainer for her team, onboarding and educating new team members and sharing her extensive knowledge of reimbursement processes and oncology care. Her passion for education is deeply connected to a childhood aspiration to become a teacher. Although her career took her into healthcare rather than traditional education, she has found a meaningful way to fulfill that goal by educating stakeholders, supporting healthcare teams, and helping others understand the complexities of reimbursement and access. Her areas of expertise include CAR-T cell therapy, oncology reimbursement, commercial payer strategy, revenue-cycle education, billing and coding, ICD-10, DRG, HCPCS, prior authorization, patient affordability, account support, infusion, pharmacy, IDNs, community cancer clinics, and market access. Beyond her professional responsibilities, Ashley is committed to supporting the blood cancer community through volunteer service with Blood Cancer United, participating in regional walks and supporting fundraisers for both local and national organizations. She approaches her career with the philosophy of leading with empathy, fostering an environment for collaboration and maintaining a clear plan while remaining flexible enough to adjust when circumstances change, advice she received early in her professional journey. She also encourages young women entering the field to believe in their abilities, give themselves grace as they grow, and pursue opportunities for professional development without hesitation. Through her leadership, education, collaboration, and service, Ashley continues to combine her expertise in healthcare access with her longstanding passion for helping others learn and succeed.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ashley

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to empathy, grit, grace, persistence, and a commitment to continuous learning. Throughout my career, I have learned to approach challenges as opportunities to find solutions rather than reasons to become discouraged. My experience across healthcare, reimbursement, oncology, and pharmaceuticals has taught me the importance of strategic thinking, strong communication, empathy, and adaptability. I have benefited tremendously from mentors, supportive leaders, and strong women who encouraged me to recognize my potential and pursue opportunities for growth. I also believe in the philosophy, “Have a plan, work the plan, and if the plan doesn’t work, rework the plan.” Whether I am helping a provider navigate a complex reimbursement issue, advocating for a patient, or educating and developing a new team member, I remain focused on listening, learning, and finding meaningful solutions. Ultimately, I measure success not only by what I accomplish personally, but also by the positive impact I can have on patients, colleagues, and the professionals I have the opportunity to support.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to have a plan, work your plan, and if the plan does not work, do not be afraid to rework it. I have carried this philosophy throughout my career because it reminds me to remain focused on my goals while staying flexible and open to change. Not every opportunity or challenge will unfold as expected, and I have learned that adjusting my approach is not a setback but an important part of growth. This mindset has helped me remain resilient, adaptable, and confident while navigating new opportunities and evolving throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to never doubt your abilities, give yourself grace, and do not be afraid to grow beyond your comfort zone. As women, we can sometimes be too quick to focus on what we may not know or the qualifications we may not have, rather than recognizing the skills and experience we already bring to the table. I encourage women to stop disqualifying themselves before someone else has the opportunity to consider them. If you meet many of the qualifications for an opportunity, apply, raise your hand, and be willing to learn what you do not yet know. Growth often comes from taking that first step, believing in your potential, and giving yourself permission to pursue opportunities before you feel completely ready.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in my field is the continued advancement of oncology and innovative therapies such as CAR-T cell therapy, which are creating new possibilities for patients and transforming the way cancer is treated. At the same time, access and reimbursement remain significant challenges for both patients and healthcare providers, particularly as therapies become more complex. I believe there is a growing need for professionals who can bridge the gap between clinical innovation, healthcare systems, reimbursement, and patient access. Education, collaboration, persistence, and advocacy are essential to navigating these challenges and ensuring that advances in treatment can translate into meaningful access and better opportunities for the patients who need them.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me, both personally and professionally, are integrity, empathy, persistence, service, collaboration, and compassion. I believe meaningful work requires more than expertise; it requires genuinely caring about the people who are affected by the decisions we make and the work we do. I strive to approach every situation with integrity, listen with empathy, and remain persistent when challenges arise. Service is also very important to me, which is why I value opportunities to support others both through my work and through my involvement in the blood cancer community. Ultimately, I measure the impact of my work by the difference I can make for patients, colleagues, and the professionals I have the opportunity to mentor and support.
