Her Interview

Ten minutes with Asilah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance. I had a lot of obstacles in my way, like getting through college was very difficult for me. But knowing that there's an end goal, and I can get there, there are so many means to get there, I just have to find one. So perseverance is really, really big for me, and I don't know how I'll get there, but I will get there.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice is remaining like it kind of ties into values or morals, is taking it day by day and not letting the stress get to you. Things can be fixed. There is always a solution. And if there is a solution, then you can be the solution. Take ownership.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think there's such a thing, it's sort of just like a phrase, because I come from like a very Caribbean background, like closed mouths don't get fed. So don't be afraid to put yourself in rooms and talk to people. Because having a connection is very, very important, and understand that you're there for a reason. You made those opportunities happen for yourself, so you need to make sure that you're loud and proud about where you are, and that you can accomplish the same thing with everybody else.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Right now, I would say AI is kind of a double-edged sword. Accounting especially in this industry or I guess business, a lot of it has to do with just recognizing pattern, but not even. The lack of recognizing the pattern, knowing when something sticks out, and understanding that there is not always a good reason for why certain things happen, especially in a business sense. You have to be able to pluck that out and determine a reasoning. And so I feel like there's a sense of morality that's kind of wavering a lot right now about what is right and wrong.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My values, I think being honest and having accountability are really, really big reasons, especially I think like as a young woman, holding your own boundaries and sticking to your boundaries, and not being ashamed of having boundaries either.
