Her Interview
Ten minutes with Assma
01What do you attribute your success to?
I believe in surrounding yourself with people who encourage you and giving back through mentoring.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I received in law school was to take everything one day at a time. I'll worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes. Focus on today and trust that everything will be okay.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Keep dreaming, keep working. One day you'll reach beyond anything you could have imagined. She believed she could, so she did.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Immigration law continues to present enormous challenges for individuals and families navigating an often complicated and overwhelming system, making knowledgeable and compassionate advocacy more important than ever. At the same time, Assma sees tremendous opportunity in educating the public, mentoring the next generation of attorneys, and encouraging more diverse voices to enter positions of leadership within the legal profession. Her own journey from daughter of Yemeni immigrants to immigration attorney and historic judge, demonstrates how representation can create new possibilities for those who follow.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Gratitude, compassion, empathy, integrity, and perspective are at the center of Assma's life and work. She believes it is important to appreciate the things that can easily be taken for granted health, clean water, electricity, family, and the opportunity to pursue one's dreams, because millions of people around the world do not have access to these basic necessities. Above all, she believes that success should never come at the expense of authenticity or character; when the titles and accomplishments fade, the integrity with which you lived and the lives you touched are what truly matter.
