About Aurora

I've been working in the health and wellness field for about 3 years now, though my background includes previous experience in food service and ski resorts before I fully transitioned into fitness and science. My main area of expertise is holistic health, with a specific focus on joint health. I research a bone and joint disease in the lab while also running my fitness coaching business, Bonafide Brilliance. A typical day for me involves balancing lab work like literature reviews and experiments with business responsibilities such as responding to potential client DMs, hopping on sales calls, getting people onboarded, writing programs, and taking check-in calls. I try to allocate my client work to a couple days a week and my lab work to a couple days a week, while also making time for my own gym sessions and mobility work. I earned my degree in biology with a chemistry minor, walking for graduation when I was 19 though I didn't technically receive my diploma until I was 20 because I graduated a couple years early. Alongside my academic education, I completed personal training internships and certification, which gave me both sides of the equation: the nitty-gritty science education and the actual application in the real world with clients. I believe having that balance has been a really big part of what has made me so successful with it all.

Ten minutes with Aurora

01What do you attribute your success to?

I just got that dawg in me, I don't know. But, more seriously, the grace of God. As I've been growing my business, I've also been growing a lot in my faith, and it's helped out my business ventures quite a bit. It helps me stay centered. I think having the balance between the nitty-gritty science education and the actual application in the real world with clients has also been a really big part of what has made me so successful with it all. Being able to work in both the lab doing biochemical research and with actual clients gives me a perspective where these areas feed into each other in a really beautiful way.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I've gotten a lot of advice on maintaining hobbies outside of work and just how that's good for you. I think that that's been super helpful. It's really important to keep things balanced and not let work consume everything, because having those other interests and activities helps me stay grounded and brings a different kind of energy to your professional life.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say probably to focus on their own health first, and then that will bleed into their work. That's been huge for me. When you take care of yourself and prioritize your own wellness, it naturally flows into the quality of work you do and the way you show up for your clients. You can't pour from an empty cup, so making your own health a priority isn't selfish, it's essential, and it will make you better at what you do.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Since I have so many different interests, making sure that I'm not letting my energy get pulled in too many directions is important. As far as opportunities go, in science there's obviously a lot of opportunity for discovery, which is huge, and you can see so much potential. In the fitness space specifically, I think there's a lot of opportunity in the way that I do coaching because there's so much emphasis on aesthetics in fitness, and then there's also the super science-based community. Since I'm someone who does science, I can see that these muscle-building studies or strength training studies need to be taken with a grain of salt. I understand that the real-world application is where it actually counts. I don't really care to think about if a split is gonna contribute to 5% more muscle growth. I care if my client's gonna stick to it.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Definitely balance. Just keeping everything in check and not letting certain things interfere with other things, especially work and life. Also, kind of just following my passion rather than following what might make me more money, and making sure that I'm aligned with my values as I'm running my business. It's important to me that what I do professionally reflects who I am personally and what I believe in, not just what might be the most profitable path. Staying true to myself and maintaining that balance between all the different areas of my life is what keeps me grounded and fulfilled.
