Dr. Avni Bhalgat, PhD
Avni Bhalgat, PhD, is a Biotech Equity Research Associate at JonesTrading with a strong foundation in cancer biology, immunology, and translational oncology. She completed her PhD at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where her research focused on immuno-oncology, STING pathway modulation, and single-cell proteomic and transcriptomic approaches for biomarker discovery. Her scientific expertise allows her to evaluate therapeutic mechanisms, translational risk, and innovation potential across emerging biotech platforms.
In addition to her academic training, she has built extensive experience at the intersection of science, venture, and commercialization. She previously served as Managing Director of Nucleate Florida, where she led strategy, partnerships, and programming for a nonprofit life sciences organization. In this role, she helped develop and launch a startup accelerator program that supported 14 early-stage biotech teams, several of which went on to incorporate and raise funding. She has also contributed to commercialization diligence on over 14 biomedical technologies and supported biotech venture development and fundraising initiatives.
Avni’s career bridges scientific research and financial strategy, combining deep technical expertise with experience in biotech ecosystems, startup development, and equity research. She is particularly focused on translating complex scientific data into investor-ready insights and supporting the advancement of early-stage biotechnology companies. Her work reflects a strong commitment to advancing translational science and strengthening the biotech innovation ecosystem.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my networking skills and my ability to build meaningful connections. I strongly believe in the power of people and in creating spaces—such as events and programs—where collaboration and engagement can thrive. My ability to communicate science in an accessible way has also helped me bridge the gap between research and broader audiences, allowing me to move beyond the lab and contribute to building opportunities for others in the biotech ecosystem.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to put myself out there, actively network, and never underestimate the long-term value of a connection. Even if a relationship or interaction does not seem immediately relevant, it can become meaningful later in ways you cannot predict.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is to avoid comparison and not allow others to discourage you. Being the youngest person or the only woman in the room is not a disadvantage—it is a strength. I encourage embracing that uniqueness, leaning into it, and confidently asking questions, even when they feel challenging. That curiosity is what sets you apart.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is the geographic fragmentation of the biotech ecosystem in Florida, where key institutions are spread across multiple cities. This makes it difficult to build a centralized, cohesive innovation network. At the same time, this presents a major opportunity, as increased investment and relocation of biotech leaders to Florida are creating momentum for a more unified and collaborative life sciences ecosystem.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In my professional life, I value networking, leadership, and empathy. I prioritize building strong relationships and maintaining humility in my work. In my personal life, I value empathy, connection, and fostering meaningful, long-term relationships with the people around me.
