Her Story

About Ayanna

My current career path is in technology - I've been working in tech for 11 years. I deployed overseas to Kuwait and then Baghdad for a total of 3 years on a government contract, working as a systems administrator managing servers and web applications. The birth of Tech Wellness Society happened when I was diagnosed with lupus and sent home from my deployment. I moved back to the States in 2023, and through that journey of learning my own health and how I needed to take care of my body differently, my mental health, my environment, everything changed. I didn't realize how stressed I was in Baghdad until the symptoms started showing up physically in my body. Tech Wellness Society is a platform and community of tech professionals bringing awareness to holistic practices for overall well-being. We curate experiences with wellness recharge sessions and retreats that include movement, nutrition, mindfulness, and environment. I used to do meditation before and after shifts in Baghdad, along with cycling classes - those two things kept me grounded. I still work in tech on a government contract with MSM Technology, and I've just started working with TechWalk, a global community where we have networking sessions literally outside. We pick a park, connect, and walk. My main area of expertise is stress relief from a movement and mindful aspect, and I've been doing a lot of research around how we can quickly regulate our nervous system.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Right now with my wellness events, the biggest challenge is the groundwork - putting in the foundations and the systems that work for my workflow so I'm not just unorganized. Building a team is also a challenge, specifically a team of practitioners who will actually come out and lead yoga or pilates sessions during the wellness recharge events and retreats. I would say outreach is my biggest challenge right now, though I wouldn't really call it a challenge, it's just me taking the time to develop my own organization when it comes to documenting things and reaching out to people. And content creation. Building out a team and a vision, and not being stuck in analysis paralysis.
