Her Story

About Aylah

I'm a sales professional at Paylocity working in the Human Capital Management industry, and I'm currently in my second month with the company. My niche is more of an advisor-type role in the mid-sized business space, working with companies that have anywhere from 50 to 500 employees around the Houston area, specifically on the north side of the city. Of course, we have clients all over the world, but my specific area is here in Houston. I meet with HR leaders and finance leaders and directors, and help them be more efficient with their costs and their HRIS system, and help to just take better care of their employees, retain their employees, and cultivate a good culture with their payroll system. I also work with partners around the city, not only directly with the companies and their HR leaders, but also partners like financial advisors, benefits brokers, and CPAs all around Houston. I have a consultative approach and really focus on having a relationship with the people I do business with, making sure that everyone's taken care of. I prefer more of a personal type of relationship and experience with the people that I work with. In terms of achievement, I was noted for shortening sales cycles from 90 days to 30 days, and on a 40K quota, I was recognized for hitting 100K, so I've been hitting some of those sales KPIs and exceeding goals while giving the people that I work with not a salesy type of experience, but more of a consultative relationship type of experience. My schooling has been life. I have some college experience, but I've also been a mother throughout the last 16 years, so I've really used sales as a way to advance myself and my career without having to have a college background, but also being able to work remotely and focus on being a mom at the same time.

Ten minutes with Aylah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to resiliency - never giving up, even when things don't look like they're going in your direction. Maybe you're getting a ton of no's, maybe deals are falling through that were supposed to come in, but just never letting that shake you. I understand that as long as you're consistently doing the behaviors that generate success, even when you don't see it, having that plus a good attitude and just believing that everything will work out, and lowering just that desperate, stressful energy is really what is that magic ingredient, that luck factor. You do good and the good comes back to you.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I would say some of the best career advice I've ever received is to focus on what you can control, especially in sales. Sometimes it can get daunting being told no over and over and over again, but just not taking that personal, focusing on your consistent day-to-day behaviors and day-to-day wins. Having that in combination with a good attitude, no matter what you go through, and the resilience will really pay off in the long run. I believe that that good attitude and consistent behavior, no matter the no's and the downs and all of that, is really that luck piece when it comes into sales, that really just pays off in the long run.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say don't let anything hold you back, whether it's the fact that you're a mom, the fact that you're a woman, maybe you're in a male-dominated field, just don't let that hold you back. Always show up, have that integrity, so that way people do trust you. Like I said, all of the compounding good behaviors and good efforts and consistent efforts in your work will always shine through and speak for itself and be returned back to you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges I would say is an over-saturated market. There's a lot of competition. As for opportunities, the company that I work for has a great reputation, a great product, and they really stand out with innovation and staying modern with technology, as well as supporting clients and adding in managed services. We've just started adding in managed services, so that's a great opportunity for business owners or leaders that need help with maybe taking something completely off of their plate and making sure it's done properly.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say integrity is a big one for me, because especially doing business, people want to be able to trust you, especially in sales. That integrity piece comes in, even on a micro level, like just doing some of the simplest things that you say you're going to do, follow up when you say you're going to follow up, and just making the folks that you do business with undoubtedly trust you, because you operate with such integrity. I think that's one of the biggest ones for me.
