Her Story

About Aysha

I currently serve as the executive assistant to the executive director of the Center for Better Aging in Chicago, where I handle all administrative communications from the executive level leadership to the rest of the organization. My responsibilities include calendar and schedule management, creating systems architecture within the organization, and developing frameworks for how we handle partnerships. I recently transitioned into healthcare administration after working in agriculture for about 5 to 7 years. My passion for elder care and senior care developed through my personal experience as a caretaker for my mother, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, and my uncle, who suffers from sarcoidosis and diabetes. I co-founded a nonprofit with my sister in 2020, where I served as co-director. One of my most notable achievements was leading a capital campaign for my nonprofit in which we raised over $500,000 in seed capital. Throughout my career, I've held numerous leadership positions, including serving as president of advocacy clubs in college and doing extensive community organizing work in my youth. My main area of expertise is leadership support, and I've consistently played crucial support roles to leaders or taken on leadership positions myself, whether leading a nonprofit organization, student councils, or different community councils. What drives me is my natural curiosity around how groups of people come to make decisions and how those decisions impact the future and the world we live in.

Ten minutes with Aysha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I definitely attribute my success to a lot of perseverance. I have faced many, many challenges in my life, including overcoming homelessness. I came from quite a humble beginning. But at various moments in my life, I've had to really make a decision to push through, really no matter what, and believe that there was a brighter future ahead. I think that's definitely helped me a lot in my current success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I think the best career advice I've ever received is to prioritize work that aligns with who you are, what you're good at, and how you can help the world. That's been really just a great way for me to kind of audit where I am working and kind of whether or not the things that I'm doing in the present align with my long-term goals. It's helped me continuously find work in places that I really care about and I'm passionate about.
