Her Story

About Baisakhi

Baisakhi Roy Anivilla is a Human Resources Generalist at Spectrum based in Apex, North Carolina, where she supports a dynamic workforce of approximately 120 to 140 employees. In her current role, she manages a broad range of HR responsibilities including leave administration, corrective actions, new hire orientations, and benefits administration. She is known for her strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and commitment to fostering a positive and efficient employee experience.

Her HR journey began unexpectedly in 2004 after completing her Master of Science in Chemistry from Calcutta University in India. She was selected through campus recruitment by the HR Director at Borosil Glassworks Limited, who recognized her natural ability to communicate and her alignment with people-focused work. After working in the scientific division for two years, she moved to the United States in 2006. What followed was a long and challenging period during which visa restrictions prevented her from working for over a decade. During this time, she remained committed to personal and professional growth by continuing her education, earning certifications, and staying engaged in learning while relocating across Maryland, Ohio, and eventually settling in North Carolina during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. She also embraced motherhood during this period, balancing family responsibilities while staying focused on rebuilding her career path.

In 2021, she re-entered the workforce as an HR Specialist at a small IT company, followed by a role as HR Coordinator at Charter Communications in late 2022. Through persistence, continuous learning, and a growth mindset, she advanced into increasingly complex HR responsibilities while consistently striving toward her goal of becoming an HR Generalist. In March 2025, she achieved that milestone promotion and was also recognized as a Spectrum Gold recipient, an honor awarded to the top 2 percent of employees, marking a significant professional achievement in her journey. Today, she continues to grow in her role while supporting employees, contributing to organizational success, and valuing the resilience and experiences that have shaped her career path.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Baisakhi

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never giving up and always believing in hard work, even though the most challenging times. When I moved to the U.S. in 2006, my visa didn't allow me to work for almost 13-14 years, and as a hard-working woman, having that hiatus which was not chosen by me was a lot to grasp. But I kept myself motivated to keep learning, doing certifications, and staying ready. I soaked everything like a sponge when I finally got back into the workforce - I absorbed everything I could because I wanted to be better. I kept myself open, curious, and ready to learn. I constantly asked what I needed to do to reach the next level, and I took constructive feedback seriously - it became one of the biggest drivers of my growth.

I’ve always believed in a simple philosophy: keep doing your work with integrity, your work ethic should speak for you and the results will follow. When you stay focused and committed, things eventually fall into place. The hardships of the last 15-17 years, every up and down, every moment of patience and resilience, have shaped me into the person I am today. Every challenge prepared me for this moment.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Staying positive, continuous learning, and keep working on yourself so that every tomorrow is a better version than yesterday.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say to young women entering this field that we need to stick together and support each other's upliftment within the community. We can be more supportive of each other with a 'you grow, I grow' mentality. I’m deeply committed to women in the workforce, and I truly believe we can excel in our fields when we choose collaboration over competition.

Beyond that, my journey has taught me that you have to be willing to work hard and never give up, even when circumstances are completely out of your control. I faced a 13–14 year work hiatus that wasn't my choice, but I kept learning, kept doing certifications, and stayed ready. When you finally get your opportunity, learn like a newbie, be ready to ask questions about what you need to do to get to the next level. Your work ethic should speak for itself, and if you stay focused and keep doing your work, things will fall into place.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge and opportunity in my field right now is continuing to grow and learn every day while adapting to constant change and evolving expectations. Over the past year in my role, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to stay curious, build new skills, and remain flexible as the industry continues to develop.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me are hard work, perseverance, and making a meaningful difference. Throughout my journey, I've learned that you have to keep yourself motivated and focused even when things don't go as planned. I believe in continuous learning and staying humble, always putting myself in the mindset of a learner so I can keep growing.

Family is central to who I am. Being a mother brings me immense joy, and like many women, I’ve had to mold myself to handle every situation - balancing family, responsibilities, and career aspirations. I had my daughter in 2012, cared for her through my career pause, welcomed my second child in 2022, and still never lost sight of my goals. Nothing stopped me from pursuing the career I wanted.

Travel is another passion that defines me. I’m grateful to my parents for introducing me to the joy of exploring new places, and after marriage, my husband and I kept that tradition alive. Now, the four of us absolutely love traveling together. I feel most alive when I’m discovering new parts of the world. Travel teaches you perspective - you realize you’re not confined to one place, and you’re not the center of everything. You see differences everywhere, but you also see the common thread that connects us all as human beings.

I also believe strongly in women supporting women. We rise higher when we lift each other up, which is why I’m committed to giving back through organizations like WICT and DOC NC. Empowering other women, especially in the workforce, is something I care about deeply.
