Her Story
About Bambi
Every day in my professional life, I get samples of cement that we're running for the oil field. I set up the recipes, basically, and then test them and make sure that they're accurate to do what we need them to do in the field. Then I report them to supervisors. What I love most about my career is the science of it. It's always something new and exciting every day. It doesn't get too monotonous, there's always something different or exciting to learn every single day. I'm usually the only woman in the general area of expertise that I'm in, and when I walk into a room as the only woman, I actually kind of like it. It gives me the opportunity to show them that I am knowledgeable and I am capable, and I am able to do the same things that they can do. Sometimes I can bring in a different perspective to things because we think a little differently than the men and can see things from a different point of view that maybe they have not considered.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Bambi
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think I'm very headstrong, and I have had the support of my family. I kind of have a will to keep going, even in the times when it was like, you know, I was in tears over math equations that I couldn't figure out. I just buckled down and I just figure it out. My husband calls it my stick-to-it-ness. Even when you're scared, just keep going. Even when you're unsure or having a hard time, or when people are giving you a hard time, I'm usually the only woman in the general area of expertise that I'm in. Just kind of got to buck up and just keep going, and never doubt yourself. Just have that confidence to reassure yourself that you've got this.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Even when you're scared, just keep going. Even when you're unsure or having a hard time, or when people are giving you a hard time, I'm usually the only woman in the general area of expertise that I'm in. Just kind of got to buck up and just keep going, and never doubt yourself. Just have that confidence to reassure yourself that you've got this.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't let them push you around. You gotta stand up for yourself and give as good as you get. When you walk into a room and you're the only woman, it gives you the opportunity to show them that you are knowledgeable and you are capable, and that you are able to do the same things that they can do. Sometimes you can bring in a different perspective to things because we think a little differently than the men and can see things from a different point of view that maybe they have not considered.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The opportunities are just trying to find the places to move up. I'm happy where I'm at, and I do like the job where I'm at, but looking for techs to work under me, that way it's possible for me to move up and actually get some time off. I'm trying to work that through with my company. I'm really happy where I'm at. I like the job, I like where I'm at with it.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, probably, and being true to yourself. These are the values that guide me in both my work and personal life.
