About Barbara

Barbara Daniels is the Director of Coding Quality at UCHealth, where she provides strategic leadership for coding quality, compliance, education, and audit initiatives across the health system. With 27 years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle management, Barbara has built a career defined by excellence, innovation, and a commitment to developing others.

Her journey began as a file clerk at St. Mary’s Hospital in Michigan. Before pursuing a career in medical coding, Barbara attended college to prepare for the profession. She credits much of her success to the mentorship of a group of accomplished women at St. Mary’s Hospital whose guidance, encouragement, and willingness to invest in her laid the foundation for the leader she is today.

Throughout her career, Barbara has developed deep expertise in medical coding, compliance, auditing, revenue cycle management, and healthcare operations. For the past 15 years, she has served in progressive leadership roles, driving quality improvement, regulatory compliance, operational performance, and organizational excellence. In her current role, she leads enterprise-wide coding quality initiatives, oversees global coding partners, collaborates with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) teams and physicians, and helps ensure coding accuracy of 95 percent or higher while maintaining compliance with Medicare regulations and supporting revenue integrity across the organization.

Barbara holds multiple nationally recognized credentials, including Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder Instructor (CPC-I), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), and Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR). She is an active member of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), reflecting her ongoing commitment to professional excellence and lifelong learning.

Beyond her executive leadership responsibilities, Barbara is passionate about education, mentorship, and empowering others to thrive. As a Certified Professional Coder Instructor, she has helped prepare and mentor aspiring coding professionals throughout their careers. She is also the founder of Life Beyond the Role, a personal and professional development platform dedicated to helping individuals and organizations redefine success, prevent burnout, and build fulfilling lives beyond their job titles. Through this platform, she has authored six books focused on professional well-being, resilience, leadership, work-life balance, burnout prevention, and overcoming imposter syndrome.

A nationally recognized speaker, Barbara frequently presents on healthcare innovation, leadership, artificial intelligence in medical coding, revenue cycle strategy, and the future of healthcare operations. Whether leading enterprise initiatives, mentoring future healthcare leaders, or inspiring audiences through her writing and speaking, Barbara remains committed to advancing the healthcare profession while helping others realize that their greatest purpose extends far beyond the role they hold.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Barbara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to five remarkable women mentors at St. Mary's Hospital who believed in my potential and gave me the opportunity to learn through hands-on, on-the-job training. Their guidance, encouragement, and willingness to share their knowledge provided the foundation for my career and instilled in me the importance of continuous learning, professional excellence, and paying it forward. Their investment in my growth not only shaped my journey as a healthcare leader but also inspired my own commitment to mentoring, teaching, and helping others achieve success in their careers.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received came from my mother when I was a teenager. She encouraged me to pursue a career that I genuinely enjoyed but also one that would provide long-term stability and take care of me in the future. That advice has guided every stage of my professional journey, reminding me to seek work that is both personally fulfilling and sustainable while continually investing in my growth and embracing new opportunities.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the healthcare industry is to always prioritize integrity, compliance, and ethical decision-making. Learn the regulations, uphold the highest professional standards, and never be afraid to speak up when something doesn't seem right. Your voice matters, and having the courage to advocate for accuracy, accountability, and patient care will earn trust, strengthen your leadership, and positively impact both your organization and the people it serves.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges facing healthcare today is balancing increasing regulatory complexity with workforce sustainability. Healthcare organizations are expected to maintain exceptional coding accuracy, ensure compliance, and optimize revenue integrity while addressing staffing shortages, burnout, and rapidly evolving technologies.

At the same time, one of our greatest opportunities is the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence. AI has the potential to streamline routine tasks, enhance coding accuracy, identify compliance risks earlier, and allow healthcare professionals to focus on higher-value work that requires critical thinking and clinical judgment. The organizations that invest in both technology and their people—through education, innovation, and professional development—will be best positioned to improve patient care, strengthen financial performance, and build resilient, future-ready teams.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, service, and continuous growth are the values that guide both my professional and personal life. I believe in leading with honesty, treating others with respect, and creating environments where people feel supported, valued, and empowered to succeed.

Professionally, I am committed to excellence, innovation, and lifelong learning. I strive to improve healthcare through quality, compliance, and responsible innovation while mentoring others to reach their full potential. Personally, my faith, family, and purpose are my foundation. As a mother, leader, and entrepreneur, I believe true success is measured not only by career achievements but by the positive impact we have on others and the legacy we leave behind.
