Barbara Lager is a fine artist, author, and creative entrepreneur whose work has spanned more than three decades in the arts. As co-owner of Lager Gallery, she has built a lasting presence in the creative community through her distinctive mixed-metal jewelry and metalscapes, known for their whimsical design and soulful expression. Her artistic practice reflects a deep commitment to craftsmanship, imagination, and the emotional resonance of handmade art.

In addition to her visual art, Barbara is the author of Breathing in Beauty, an inspirational book of poetry and reflective writings that invites readers on a journey of self-awareness and inner connection. Through her words, she shares messages of mindfulness, healing, and awakening, extending her creative voice beyond the gallery and into the personal lives of her readers. Her work as an author complements her artistic philosophy—art as a tool for reflection, presence, and meaning.

A graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Arts, Barbara has spent over 35 years cultivating a life rooted in creativity and expression. Whether through metal, poetry, or gallery leadership, she continues to inspire others to slow down, notice beauty, and engage more deeply with the world around them. Her career stands as a testament to the power of art to nurture both personal growth and community connection.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to trusting my intuition, embracing curiosity, and having the courage to let my creative path evolve organically through art, writing, and healing. Resilience, self-teaching, and staying aligned with a higher purpose have allowed my work to grow across seasons of life while remaining deeply authentic.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to have courage, follow what genuinely lights you up, ask questions freely, and trust yourself. The path doesn’t need to be linear—the most meaningful work often unfolds in ways you never imagined.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges—and opportunities—is that many women tie their identity to a role and pour everything into it while neglecting their own needs and creative growth. The opportunity lies in reclaiming self-love and alignment, because when we feel whole and connected, that inner harmony naturally elevates both our art and our lives.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is my grounding force, and my belief in the inherent goodness of people—along with self-love and compassion, especially for women—guides both my art and my life. I value empathy, service, and authenticity, measuring success not just by achievements, but by how fully and kindly I show up for others and myself.
