Barbara Norman
Barbara Norman is a compassionate educator, author, and dedicated animal advocate whose work centers on deepening the human–animal bond through awareness, empathy, and responsible care. Based in El Granada, California, she describes her mission as elevating how people perceive and treat animals—not as possessions, but as companions with emotional, intellectual, and social needs. Guided by the Lakota concept of TECIHILA, meaning “You live in my heart,” Barbara promotes a philosophy rooted in respect, connection, and mutual enrichment between humans and animals.
Her advocacy took on a new dimension with the publication of her children’s book Sweetie Petey Finds A Friend, an engaging story that blends adventure with meaningful lessons on rabbit care and adoption. Through her work with Adopt A Pet Publishing, Barbara champions the “adopt, don’t shop” movement, raising awareness about the importance of rescuing animals from shelters. She further reinforces her commitment by donating a portion of her book’s proceeds to rabbit rescue organizations, while also educating families—especially children—on the responsibilities and joys of caring for animal companions.
In addition to her writing, Barbara actively volunteers with organizations such as the House Rabbit Society and participates in community initiatives like “Bunnies and Books,” which combine literacy with animal advocacy. Her lifelong love for animals—ranging from dogs and cats to birds and rabbits—has also included hands-on experience in rescue work, such as volunteering at a marine mammal center in Oregon. Whether through teaching, storytelling, or outreach, Barbara continues to inspire others to lead with compassion and become more conscious stewards of the animal kingdom.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
My personal challenges are technology - it's just overwhelming and I'm not very proficient at it. Another challenge in the author-slash-publication field is there are a gazillion self-publishing people, and the public is very fickle. They want the shiny, bright thing that's just come out. It's daunting to get the attention of people when there are so many authors and books out there. I've seen other authors who know how to market really well and have sold a lot of books, even when the content isn't necessarily raising awareness like I'm trying to do. So marketing and getting people's attention is a real challenge for me.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I think I'm a heart-based human who looks for connections from the heart. If anything, my expertise is that I try to lead from the heart. There's a quote from a spiritual program I have followed for 30 years: 'teach only love, for that is what you are.' Whether I'm meeting people in the park, at the rabbit rescue, or in the classroom, I try to lead with a heart and give them an opportunity to open up their hearts. I try to live in gratitude and appreciation, and not get too caught up in the news.
