Her Interview
Ten minutes with Barbara
01What do you attribute your success to?
I come from a lineage of hard-working women and women who uphold integrity. And that has helped shape the person I have grown into today.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do what you love. Even if it's not paying now, it's gonna pay later. And when you do what you love, it does not feel like a task. It feels like you're living your regular, normal life.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Keep striving in the face of hardship and the hurdles sent your way. Focus on the goal and not the hurdles themselves. Keep fixated on the goal and work hard towards that goal. If you direct your attention at every dog that barks, you would be derailed.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The most difficult challenge is the risk factor. We are existing in an environment where when you look different, sound different, you are treated differently. With an accent, people don't get to experience you until you go out of your way to prove yourself. You have to be twice as great to be accepted or listened to.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity. Equity. Treat everybody like you would want yourself treated.
