About Benita
Benita Driggers serves as a facility/project manager at Shaw Industries, a flooring company in the manufacturing sector. She began her career there in 1988, starting at the bottom in the tufting department and working her way up through roles including running tufting machines and serving as an admin for corporate facilities. Over her 38 years with the company, Driggers advanced to her current position in the Global Facilities side, where she manages administrative offices and facilities at eight locations as part of a three-person team responsible for 22 facilities total. Her responsibilities include budgeting, overseeing office furniture needs and service contracts, and leading renovation projects for administrative areas, including offices, breakrooms, restrooms, and conference rooms. She uses facility management software to manage work orders and occupancy across facilities and has learned to implement views in the system to calculate costs for floor installation projects and the floor-cleaning service. She has demonstrated her impact by recently implementing cost-effective changes that saved the company approximately $80,000 annually on janitorial services, showcasing her ability to deliver tangible results. Driggers credits her success to her focus on innovative solutions and strategic thinking-qualities that drive efficiency and savings. She is a dedicated problem solver and helper who emphasizes learning one's audience when working with people across facilities. For young women entering the industry, she advises believing in oneself, recognizing that it is not necessary to know everything immediately but rather knowing who to contact when the need arises, building trusting relationships with contractors and the occupants will go a long way when you have an issue at a facility, and confidently sharing accomplishments with management.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Benita
01What do you attribute your success to?
Seeking wisdom and knowledge. I know that I don't know everything, so I'm always willing to learn. If a problem arises, I think outside the box, go online, and look for ways to solve the issue. I'm a problem solver and a helper; that's probably one of my best attributes.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Believe in yourself. You don't have to know everything right off the bat, you just need to know who to call. You can do anything you set your mind to. Don't be afraid to tell people what you have done and let management know the projects you've worked on.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Working in facilities can be a little challenging by itself. There is always a need arising while you are working on another issue. Therefore, you are constantly changing direction from one issue to another. I like the ever-changing world of facilities because it shows how resilient we need to be, which I think makes our efforts feel recognized and valued.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value honesty, respect, a good work ethic, and the willingness to learn.
