Elizabeth “Beth” Baseler is a highly accomplished clinical research leader and independent consultant with more than 46 years of experience advancing global health initiatives and complex clinical trial operations. Most recently serving as the Directorate Head for the Clinical Monitoring Research Program at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research until her retirement in December 2022, Beth has built a distinguished career grounded in scientific excellence, strategic leadership, and a deep commitment to improving patient outcomes. Today, she continues to lend her expertise as an independent consultant, advising on clinical operations, strategic planning, and program execution for large-scale research initiatives.

Throughout her career, Beth has demonstrated exceptional ability in leading large, multidisciplinary teams and managing complex, high-impact programs. In her executive leadership role, she oversaw more than 275 personnel and managed an annual operating budget exceeding $200 million, ensuring the successful execution of clinical research programs aligned with National Institutes of Health priorities. Her leadership was instrumental in maintaining regulatory compliance, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and building organizational capacity. She also played a critical role in global emergency response efforts, supporting clinical research operations during outbreaks such as Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19.

Beth’s expertise spans clinical research operations, strategic planning, regulatory oversight, and program and project management. As a Senior Subject Matter Expert, she has advised on operational strategy, developed financial and technical proposals, and created educational resources to enhance rapid-response capabilities in infectious disease outbreaks. Known for her collaborative leadership style, she fosters environments that encourage innovation, problem-solving, and cross-functional teamwork. Her work has consistently supported the advancement of clinical trials in cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other infectious diseases on a global scale.

A lifelong learner and dedicated mentor, Beth holds a Master of Science in Administration and Management from Hood College and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from McDaniel College. She has remained committed to sharing her knowledge and experience with the next generation of researchers, providing guidance and leadership to professionals across the field. What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the guidance and support of mentors like Dr. Walter Urba, Dr. Cliff Lane, and my husband, as well as my mother’s encouragement, and I am committed to mentoring young women in science to help them navigate their careers and build strong networks.

My advice to young women entering the field is to build strong networks and never stop learning.
