Her Story

About Betsy

I'm the VP of Marketing at Canoe, where I'm responsible for the company's brand, our messaging, and our positioning. I also lead our business development team, and year after year, we have generated 40-50% of all of the revenue at the company through our marketing efforts, through events and content and PR and media. I'm really responsible for the company's brand and driving a lot of demand for our solutions in the alternative investment space. I started at Canoe as a consultant back in December of 2018, about 7 and a half years ago. Canoe was one of my first clients when I had a fintech marketing business between Visible Alpha and joining Canoe. I've been completely full-time for about three and a half to four years now. What I'm most proud of is starting this business at the very ground floor and really propelling it to be the market leader in the alternative investment space, growing the business from really no clients when I started to over 500, and opening up more offices in the U.S. and in London. I'm proud of being the person and the team behind Canoe's growth trajectory, becoming the market leader and a household name in the space. Personally, I'm really proud of how I've evolved, especially over the past year and a half to two years, with new technologies and AI tools that are available to grow the business and operate the marketing team with so much more efficiency and precision. I'm also proud of balancing family and work, being able to still be a very present mother and wife and daughter while also giving it 150% at work.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the things that I learned earlier, very early on, in an executive coaching program, was in every interaction with everyone in life, you know, what do you want the other person to know about you? Or what are you communicating? What do you want them to know? What do you want them to do? So you're communicating with someone, what's the call to action? And then, what do you want them to believe? So, in this interaction, you're asking someone to do something, you're sharing some information. What kind of feeling do you want the other person to have after this interaction with you?

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think throughout my career and my life, the one thing that I've always kind of wake up thinking about and go to sleep thinking about is how can I create impact today? Or what's the impact that I create today? So I think for women starting out in their careers, I would take that mindset, because when you think about whatever your goals are, what can I do today, even if it's a micro step, what can I do today to help me on that path to achieving my goal? Whether it is to prove yourself with your manager, or get a promotion, or do an exceptional job on the projects that you're working on, whatever it is, but thinking about what can I do to drive impact. And one of the things that I learned earlier, very early on, in an executive coaching program, was in every interaction with everyone in life, what do you want the other person to know about you? So, I guess that's my advice, like, think about what you want people to know, do, and believe after talking with you on any level, and how are you driving impact in your day-to-day to achieve your goals?
