Her Story
About Betsy
I've spent about 25 to 30 years in print production, and I was literally born with ink in my blood. My father worked in lithography after he got out of the service, shooting giant cameras and doing color correction for magazines and newspapers, and I would go in there as a little kid and just play on the equipment. I've always been kind of artistic - I danced and did performing arts in high school and college, minored in art, and I draw, paint, and sculpt. My career began in flexographic printing, which is labels and packaging, then I learned offset printing at Line Graphics in Denver where I worked for many years until the owner retired. That's when I decided to transition into magazines because I wanted to get out of the printing atmosphere and into pre-press. I found Active Interest Media and worked there for 13 years on magazines like Backpacker, Yoga Journal, Clean Eating, and American Cowboy - very eclectic magazines specific to particular interests. When Outside Magazine purchased those titles, I transferred over with them and became their pre-press manager for almost 5 years. I did all the covers, retouched all the images inside the magazine to make sure they were clean with good color and ready for print, checked all the pages before they went to the printer to ensure there were bleeds and spot colors were named correctly, and made sure we followed printer specifications so we didn't have any expensive redos. They eventually decided to outsource the work and shuttered the department, so I got laid off. I'm both creative and technical, which is why I love this work - it supplies both interests for me. I really enjoy photo retouching and Photoshop work, and I've done catalog images for Zeo Graphics Optics and Born Shoes. Right now I'm looking at freelance and contract work in pre-press, flexographic printing, and photo retouching, and I'm excited to learn more about AI and see where the industry goes.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Learn everything you can. Every software that you can get your hands on, learn it. Just stay diligent and learn everything you can from everyone that has walked your path before you. I think you can get into my industry pretty easily without going to college, but college is a good thing, so I would say education is very important, whether it's professional or if it's on-the-job training. Some type of exposure or even if you don't get necessarily a full degree, there's tons of certifications or classes you can take that will set you apart. You never stop learning because it changes so much all the time. Every time you see a new program out there, pop it up and learn it.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is that printing is diminishing in the book category and magazine category. There are still magazines and books being printed, don't get me wrong, but it is going down to the digital side, which is okay, you know, it's just the way it is. The opportunities are definitely on the digital side. I really want to get into photo retouching and still stay in print production - it's still a viable field. You just have to adapt and roll with the changes. Most people with the newer generations coming up are wanting digital, so I understand it, it's the way it goes.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value my family immensely. I spend quite a bit of time with them, so they are very important to me. I have 3 dogs that are very important to me - they're big dogs, 70, 80-pound dogs, and they keep us safe. In my work, it's important for me to stay detail-oriented and on top of everything that I need to do my job well. And of course, a work-life balance because of my family. You've got to keep that balance - so many people when they're young and first out there are just on fire in their work and then they reach a certain age going, kind of lonely, I don't really have a bunch of friends, I haven't seen my family in years.
