Her Story

About Betty

Betty Garrett is an accomplished speaker coach and business owner with over four decades of experience in the speaking and events industry. She is the owner of her speaker coaching business, where she helps professional speakers clarify what matters most, increase their influence, and design messages that attract buyers and bureaus. Her career path began after moving from Monroe, Louisiana to Dallas in 1967, where she worked for Braniff in reservations for 16 years, then at Mary Kay Travel Department, which led her into the meetings and events industry. She served as Manager of Education at Meeting Professionals International, identifying and hiring speakers and trainers for various programs. In the early 1990s, she founded Garrett Speakers International, a speaker's bureau that she led for 31 years before selling it about four years ago. She then transitioned to coaching professional speakers, drawing on her unique background from both the bureau side and as a meeting planner. She is a member of MPI and NSA, and has received awards including Meeting Professional of the Year from NSA headquarters, the Marian Kirschner Leadership Award through MPI, and lifetime achievement through MPI. Her success is attributed to being honest, truthful, and authentic, along with her faith.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Betty

01What do you attribute your success to?

Being honest, truthful and authentic. And believe in God or a higher being. What you see is what you get.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do what makes you happy. Don't do it just because you're gonna get paid a lot of money. It has to come from the heart. What gets you up in the morning? What's in your heart? What drives you? That is the path that you should take. It shouldn't be the money. It is whatever makes you happy.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The environment is changing so rapidly that it is hard to stay up with the most current trends and how it's affecting the speaking industry. AI has had an impact only if you use AI as a creative tool. There are so many people who think they can be a professional speaker. They'll read a book and think oh I can talk on this. And they are not a thought leader but they think they are. It is hard are very difficult now to stay on top of everything with the uncertainty, the changes, and everything that's going on in the world. It impacts the meetings and events industry but it's still a healthy industry and we will always have face-to-face meetings.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Trust. If I don't trust you we can't work together. And if I don't trust you, we can't be friends.
