Her Story

About Bhavana

With over 6 years of experience in the information technology field, I specialize in data science and data analytics. My career journey has been marked by a significant transition from finance to IT, which I consider one of my biggest achievements. This shift has allowed me to bring a unique dual perspective to my work, combining the knowledge from my Indian roots with American culture. My career path hasn't been without challenges - after becoming a mother, I had to leave my job and later restart my career from scratch, which taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and self-motivation. Currently, I'm pursuing a Master's in Information Technology at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, building on my Bachelor's of Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications (2016), MBA, and professional graduate certification in data science. I believe in keeping myself motivated regardless of the situation, continuously upgrading my skills to stay current with the field, and maintaining my self-respect in society and among family and friends. Beyond my professional life, I'm a fitness enthusiast who dedicates at least one hour daily to physical wellness, and I enjoy dance and music as ways to maintain balance in my life.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to keeping myself motivated no matter what situations come my way - whether I'm in the field or not. I believe in staying motivated to maintain my standards at all times and to gain self-respect in society and in front of my family and friends. Another key factor is continuously upgrading myself to stay current with my field. I've learned that nobody is responsible for your happiness, so you have to take care of yourself and keep yourself motivated. This realization became especially clear to me after becoming a mother. If you can be happy with whatever you're doing right now, that's the biggest strength, and I think it's important to keep telling everyone that.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best professional advice I've received is that you need to properly manage your daily routine tasks and plan what you want to do for tomorrow. I think good management skills are important for planning your next day - that should be your primary goal, to plan your day accordingly. On the personal side, the best advice has been about maintaining work-life balance. You should spend time with your family as well as your work, so basically, the work-life balance should be there.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say you don't need any four walls to stand in - you should express everything through digital mediums, even if you're not able to stand out from the crowd physically. You should keep upgrading yourself and spend some time with yourself rather than only spending time with family. Keep motivating yourself and stay connected with spiritual energies while also enhancing your physical and mental energy by working on yourself, all while keeping track with your family. I think you need to spend a lot of time to praise yourself and to love yourself more. This is true because, as I realized after becoming a mother, no one is going to take care of you the way you can take care of yourself. You have to keep yourself motivated so that you can be happy with whatever you're doing right now, because nobody's responsible for your happiness. I think that's the biggest strength, and I keep telling everyone that.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in information technology right now is that a lot of professionals are struggling to find jobs. You can see many people who have the necessary desired skills but still can't get the job right now. The job market isn't as good as it was in the previous 5 years. It's not that bad, but people have to keep struggling with finding jobs right now. However, I think they should keep themselves motivated, and I believe the right time will come. If they are generous and pure in their work and doing good, things will work out. On the opportunity side, I think the field of artificial intelligence (AI) is the most important skill right now. Everybody wants AI because every task needs to take less time and be automated without involving human effort. That is the most important opportunity in the field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important value I keep in mind is that you should basically do good for others. If you can't do good for others, then at least don't speak or think badly of others. I believe in being neutral to everyone. These are the values I keep in mind and import into my work and personal life.
