Her Story

About Bianca

I started in education as a teacher after getting my master's in teaching from USC, following a background in acting and DJing and attending Hunter College. I became a teacher to provide the connected, positive experience I missed in my own schooling. After 7-8 years in the classroom, I moved to creating professional learning as a consultant and have been at Learning Ally for four and a half years managing the department. I focus on building sustainable training for educators, especially in literacy for middle and high school, partnering with funders like Dollar General Literacy Foundation to deliver it at no cost to districts in need.

Ten minutes with Bianca

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute it to self-awareness and speaking authentically from the heart. I became a Dale Carnegie coach and trainer which helped me become aware of how I represent myself. I developed an unwavering inner fire knowing I'm worthy, and continue to build awareness to represent the inside Bianca better. Speaking authentically draws the right people to you.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Knowing your worth and understanding what you're willing to tolerate and what you have to do something about. Believe in your capabilities and that you're as valuable as any C-level executive. Never think of yourself as 'just a teacher'.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't worry about doing it the way everyone else has done it. Forge your own path, and it can look different. There's more than one way to impact education than becoming a teacher. Discover what your own mission and values are.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

A big opportunity is providing training for middle and high school teachers in the science of reading, as most are single-subject educators now expected to teach reading too. A challenge is the expectation in ed tech and education spaces for teachers and former teachers to overdo it and work more than paid, requiring a paradigm shift to stand up for fair support and pay.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, integrity, and female empowerment at home and at work. Women deserve opportunity, leadership opportunities, and balance. We deserve to have space for a full life, realize our potential, and be healthy, regulated, rested individuals.
