Her Story
About Bianca
My main areas of expertise have to do with the intersection of government, public service, policy, and community engagement. I've had the privilege of working in the U.S. Senate, state government, and local government, and I've seen firsthand the impact that policy makes and the importance of the community in developing that policy, as well as the impact that the government has in actually implementing good policy. As one of the first - I think I was the second or third Latinas to serve as Chief of Staff in the U.S. Senate - my interest has always been in making sure that I serve as a mentor. It's a real pride for me to see so many women and men succeed in the roles that haven't always been typically defined for everyone. I do believe that good policy creates strong communities, and working towards that has always been part of my ethos. I started my career with the American Cancer Society for a couple of years, then took a path through government for the span of my career. The nonprofit world is actually a pretty recent development for me, since about 2023. I currently serve as Senior Advisor for Talent with EQUIS Research, a position I've held full-time since 2024.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I think watching my parents work very hard - that's it. Just knowing that work ethic will always carry you. My mom, Emily, and my dad, Gilbert, and my grandmothers, Grandma Ortiz and Grandma Baroni - they were widows at a very young age, the two of them, and they were just an incredible force. Also, never be afraid of your language - the language of your ancestors and the language of your parents. These are the foundations that have shaped who I am and what I've been able to accomplish.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You are not alone. It's okay to not have the answers. What is not okay is to not use your network of experts to find the answers - and we all have them. We have to learn to be vulnerable. As a woman, and as a woman of color, that is always obvious. However, there are women before us who are giants, who we should not be afraid to talk to and ask for advice, because we're going to be in positions where we need to go to experts, and we need to get out of our comfort zone. And also, always lead with love. You can never go wrong.
