Brandi King is the Outreach and Event Coordinator for Last Mile Food Rescue, Inc. in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she leads community engagement, public speaking, and event coordination efforts. In her current role, Brandi has recently orchestrated Last Mile’s participation in the Cincinnati Reds’ 150th Opening Day Parade, coordinating logistics, banners, and partnerships with other local nonprofits. She joined Last Mile through a partnership with the Public Allies Leadership Program under AmeriCorps and is set to transition permanently to the organization after completing the program.

Before entering the nonprofit sector, Brandi built a successful career in the corporate insurance and benefits industry, earning licenses in property, casualty, life, health, and annuities across all 50 states. She worked with major companies such as Anthem, State Farm, and Aon, specializing in Medicare and Medicaid benefit consultation. After nearly a decade in Atlanta, she returned to Cincinnati seeking a career path more aligned with her passion for service and community impact—a journey that brought her full circle back to Last Mile, an organization that had previously supported her during a transitional period in her life.

Brandi holds a high school diploma from Walnut Hills High School and pursued studies in communications, pre-law, and African American studies at Northern Kentucky University. She is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, participates in the Cincinnati Regional Chamber through her employer, and continues her leadership development with Public Allies. Outside of work, she enjoys theater, live music, reading, creative projects, and volunteering with charitable organizations, including Last Mile Food Rescue and St. Vincent de Paul. Her professional focus emphasizes service, dignity, and connecting surplus food to communities in need.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being open to other people’s experiences. I grew up attending diverse schools, which exposed me to a wide range of perspectives, and throughout my professional career, I’ve had the opportunity to travel extensively and work in different roles across multiple industries. I believe that these varied experiences have shaped my approach and continue to drive my work. At the core, I’ve always had a genuine passion for service—helping people and making a positive impact on others has been a constant guiding principle in everything I do.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay flexible and keep an open mind. Recognize that your worldview is just one perspective—being open to others’ experiences and viewpoints is essential for growth, both personally and professionally.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In my field, some of the biggest challenges I’ve observed include balancing profit pressures with the desire to provide service-centered work. At the community level, issues like food insecurity, limited grocery access, and transportation barriers are pressing. However, these challenges also create meaningful opportunities—through initiatives like mobile markets, strategic partnerships, and collaborative efforts, we can address these gaps and make a real impact.

The values that guide me most in both my work and personal life are service, dignity, and helping others. These principles shape how I approach every opportunity and interaction, ensuring that I make a positive impact wherever I can.
