Her Story

About Breana

I'm currently a student studying AMC Marketing, which includes marketing communications, PR, journalism, career strategies, and strategic marketing. I got into my school from an essay I wrote about being passionate about marketing and addressing some of the issues I've been seeing in marketing due to diversity, like how sometimes we still get bad marketing campaigns. In my typical day, I attend lectures and then the teacher will have us do exercises where we pretend we're different companies and think about what would be good for them. I just recently did a project where my teacher gave us a brand and I did a mock-up of a creative strategy for Duolingo. Outside of school, I usually like scrolling on social media, which also keeps me in touch with what's around me, which is very important in my field - just to know things in pop culture, things that happen around me, and stay informed. I stay true to myself and put myself in my work, and overall, anything I do, I want to be able to have fun with it and make it fun for me.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is that anytime you meet someone, you should look them up and keep those contacts for networking. It's important to maintain those connections and build your network as you go.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You always need to find time for yourself, because I know, at least when you're in school, you worry about grades, you always worry about the next project, having final projects to do. It's very, very hard to find something that makes you happy, even if it's just 10 minutes. Try not to overwork yourself out. Just, even for a moment, find something that makes you happy.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

As of now, it's hard to find internships. That's something I've been looking for and I haven't heard anything personally yet. I've heard from my own classmates that there are problems finding internships - it's a very saturated market with a lot of competition.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I stay true to myself and put myself in my work. Overall, anything I do, I want to be able to have fun with it, make it fun for me, and just be true to myself. Those are the values that guide me in everything I do.
