Her Story
About Bree
Bree Carter is a real estate development professional with more than 20 years of experience. She started her career in the multifamily space on the operations side, focusing on resident interactions and day-to-day outcomes. From there she advanced through corporate support functions, project management for reinvestment, acquisitions, and ultimately into development to bridge the gap between developers and operations teams. For the past six years she has worked on a mixed-use project involving commercial, retail, hotel, hospitality, and multifamily residential assets, with a focus on creating a connected customer experience across the campus. Bree earned a fire certificate and an Associate of Science from Santa Ana Community College before transferring to Cal State Long Beach, where she graduated with a business degree in management and operational management. She is passionate about volunteering for organizations in partnership with others and enjoys supporting local small businesses through Small Business Saturday activities with her son. Bree attributes her success to embracing discomfort as a sign of growth, staying curious, saying yes to opportunities, and viewing her career as a jungle gym of horizontal moves across fields rather than a traditional ladder climb. She values integrity, accountability, transparency, and maintaining a sense of fun in her work.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Bree
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think it's just remembering that if you're uncomfortable, you're growing. Stay growing, and it's okay to be uncomfortable and step into things. Say yes to the opportunities that come up. Don't be afraid to try new things. My career has been a jungle gym moving horizontally across different fields rather than climbing a ladder.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Always stay curious, and no job too small. My career has been like a jungle gym moving horizontally across different fields that compose an entire development project rather than climbing a ladder.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Stay curious. Always stay curious. There's no job too small. Goals can be limiting. It's about taking the next opportunity that comes in front of you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is silos when you have experts in one vertical trying to translate customer experience needs across disciplines and understand the domino effect of decisions. The biggest opportunity is in mixed-use projects connecting assets across verticals like entertainment retail and residential to enhance customer experience rather than having them compete and leveraging amenities across disciplines.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, accountability, transparency, and not taking everything so seriously. Have a good time. If you're doing something that you love it should shine and everyone should be able to see that.
