Her Interview
Ten minutes with Brenda
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to showing up consistently, having integrity, and doing what's expected of me. Two ladies in my early 20s encouraged me to do better. The advice I received was you're great when you're here, but you gotta show up, you gotta be here. You know what's expected of you, just do it. I value accountability and faith, believing God has something for me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received is to show up and be present. You're great when you're here, Sharon, but you gotta show up, you gotta be here. You fall off for like a week and a half and you do better. Integrity is key - do what's expected of you.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Target might not be your stopping point, but it gives you balance to what your stopping point look like, as far as coming to work on time, being in dress code, doing what's asked of you, when it's asked of you. It trains you for your stopping point. Especially for women.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges include scheduling for single moms who need to work Monday through Friday but are required to work every other weekend. Retail stores can make it with youth on the weekends. It's hard to balance as a single mom.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, accountability, and faith are most important. You know what's expected of you, just do it. Grounded in faith, believing God has something different for me. I live blessing to blessings instead of paycheck to paycheck.
