Her Story

About Brenda

Brenda Caldera Munoz is a dedicated educator, school counselor, and aspiring therapist committed to supporting the academic, emotional, and personal development of students in K–12 education. Based in Hayward, California, Brenda is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Counseling and Guidance at San José State University, following the completion of her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, East Bay in December 2022. Initially pursuing a career in nursing, Brenda discovered her passion for psychology and counseling during the challenges of the pandemic, inspiring her to transition into a field centered on understanding human behavior, promoting mental wellness, and making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Brenda began her career in education at her high school alma mater, Hayward Twin Oaks Montessori School, where she served as a Teacher Assistant before advancing into counseling-focused responsibilities. In her role as a School Counselor Intern, she provides individualized student support, facilitates group counseling sessions, and develops social-emotional learning (SEL) initiatives that encourage resilience, self-awareness, and student success. Alongside her graduate studies, Brenda is continuing to pursue additional training toward becoming a therapist, with the goal of transitioning into a full-time counseling position after completing her degree.

Driven by a passion for service and community impact, Brenda is committed to creating inclusive and supportive environments where students feel empowered to thrive. As a first-generation Latina professional, she credits her parents’ encouragement and sacrifices as a significant source of her motivation and perseverance. She is an active member of the American School Counselor Association and values empathy, patience, and compassion as guiding principles in both her professional and personal life. Brenda believes in embracing growth one step at a time and is dedicated to helping others navigate challenges, discover their strengths, and achieve their goals.

Ten minutes with Brenda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the unwavering support, encouragement, and motivation of my parents. As a first-generation Latina and the firstborn in my family, I was inspired by their sacrifices and their belief in the importance of education. They encouraged me to persevere through challenges, celebrate every milestone, and continue striving for excellence. Their appreciation for each achievement fueled my determination and motivated me to keep growing, pursuing my goals, and creating opportunities to make my family and community proud.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is that everything happens in its own time. As we say in Spanish, “todo a su tiempo.” It is easy to feel pressured to rush achievements or compare your journey to others, but meaningful growth takes patience and consistency. I have learned the importance of taking each step intentionally, trusting the process, and allowing myself the time needed to develop both personally and professionally. Prioritizing balance and mental well-being has helped me continue moving forward while appreciating each stage of my journey.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the counseling and education field is to never give up and trust the process. Every opportunity comes at the right time, and success is built through persistence, patience, and continued growth. Rejection or setbacks should not discourage you from pursuing your goals; instead, use them as motivation to keep moving forward. I have seen the importance of perseverance through examples like students who continued applying despite previous rejections and eventually achieved their goals. Stay committed, believe in yourself, and remember that every step forward is part of your journey.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges and opportunities in my field right now is supporting students and communities as we continue to navigate the lasting effects of the pandemic. Many children are experiencing difficulties with social skills, emotional regulation, and adapting to classroom environments, which has contributed to increased challenges within schools. At the same time, this creates an important opportunity for educators and counselors to provide guidance, rebuild connections, and help students develop the skills they need to thrive. I am inspired to be part of this work by helping reestablish a sense of community, strengthening student support systems, and contributing to a healthier and more connected society.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in my work and personal life are empathy and patience. I believe it is essential to consider what others may be experiencing and to approach every situation with understanding, compassion, and an open mind. Everyone has their own personal challenges and circumstances, and taking the time to listen and support others rather than focusing only on our own perspectives can make a meaningful difference. These values guide the way I interact with students, colleagues, and my community, allowing me to create positive and supportive relationships built on respect and kindness.
