Her Story

About Brenda

I started in traffic control when the typing company I worked for opened their own traffic division and handed me the keys to a TMA. I've been doing it ever since because I love helping the public get where they need to go safely. As foreman, I run the entire day shift operations, task out the crew, implement TCP plans according to OSHA and TxDOT standards, and ensure everyone goes home safe. I hold certifications including OSHA, First Aid, PCT, and TCS. I only have my GED but my experience has taught me everything I know, and I take pride in being the organized resource everyone turns to.

Ten minutes with Brenda

01What do you attribute your success to?

My father taught me safety, to take pride in what I do, never let anybody tell you you can't do something, and always be appreciative of the people who helped get you there. He always told me if it wasn't for your people under you, you wouldn't be where you're at today. I used to go to work with my dad when I was a kid.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My CSO told me to learn to not take things so personally because I love my guys and used to take things personal and go home crying every day. He said keep doing what you do because I was really good at it and don't let anybody take a step from me.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep your head up. Believe in yourself. You can do this. Don't let nobody knock you down. And if they do, just so happen, knock you down, get right back up. Look at the bright side. There is a bright side.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Having a new crew is a challenge but the really hard times have been ironed out. As a leader now, my work ethic shows and I am a working foreman that gets out of the truck and does the work myself because I can't send my crew to do something I can't do.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

At home my values are my family and taking care of my family. At work I do the same thing, I take care of my crew, make sure my guys are good, not overheating or being too cold. I take the life of the crew and the public and production serious and want everyone to go home in one piece.
