Her Story

About Brenda

I served as a Durham County Commissioner for 16 years, where I became the chair and the president of the state association of all 100 counties, which I consider my most notable professional achievement. Before becoming a commissioner, I had my own business as an executive coach. What inspired me to get into politics was making decisions to take care of our children and impact the children in the community. Since retiring from my role as commissioner, I continue to work doing speaking engagements, training, and executive coaching. I work with mid to high-level executives around career development. My typical day involves working with people either as groups or individuals, connecting people around policy, helping people understand what policy is about, and coaching them around their relationships in the organization. I'm currently creating a new brand for myself, transitioning from being an elected official to someone that supports elected officials through coaching and development.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Brenda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work. It's just hard work.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received was to give it all you got, to play full out. I was worried about performing in front of the room, and that men would take my moves from a different perspective, and I was holding back. Someone told me that they're gonna speak whatever they want to think anyway, they're already gonna think it, so just give it all you got. In other words, play full out.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to know their why. Know why you're doing it.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Everything in politics is a challenge right now. Everything is a challenge. I'm glad I'm not in it right now, because everything is a challenge.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are integrity and respect.
