Her Interview

Ten minutes with Brenda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the incredible support system that has surrounded me throughout my life and career. My family, extended family, and my children's families have continually encouraged, challenged, and believed in me every step of the way. I have also been fortunate to work alongside exceptional administrators and mentors who have pushed me to grow professionally, challenged me to become a better educator, and inspired me to reach my full potential.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to always question and remain curious. By asking questions and wondering about new possibilities, I keep myself open to learning, embracing new ideas, and discovering better ways to serve students and educators. In education, continuous growth depends on our willingness to stay curious and never stop learning.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women entering education to prioritize self-care because no one else can do that for you. Make time to rest and decompress, even when life feels overwhelming. Don't be afraid to ask for help or admit that you don't have all the answers—vulnerability is a strength that leads to growth. Even on the most difficult days, take a moment to reflect on three positive things or three blessings in your day, because gratitude helps build resilience and keeps you focused on what truly matters.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Education is experiencing tremendous opportunities through advances in technology, particularly artificial intelligence, which can help educators identify instructional trends, analyze student data, and make more informed decisions. At the same time, we continue to face significant challenges, including limited funding that affects staffing, resources, and educational programming. Another ongoing challenge is partnering with families who are balancing multiple jobs and responsibilities, making it more difficult to maintain consistent engagement and collaboration.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is the foundation of everything I do, and I believe in always putting family first. I value treating every person with kindness and respect, even when we have different perspectives or opinions. Honesty, integrity, commitment, and following through on my responsibilities are principles that guide both my personal life and my professional work. If I commit to something, I believe it is my responsibility to see it through.
