Her Interview

Ten minutes with Brenda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to pursue opportunities outside of my original plan. After graduating from San Diego State University, I initially aimed for a career in marketing but quickly realized how competitive that path was. Instead of waiting for the “perfect” role, I took a chance on a business development position in cybersecurity—something I never initially saw myself doing. That decision changed everything. I leaned into learning, sought out mentorship, and focused on building genuine relationships. My success has come from staying open-minded, working hard, and consistently showing up with curiosity and intention.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received is: people buy from people they trust and like. Early in my career, I learned that success in sales—and really any field—is rooted in relationship building. It’s not just about having the best product or pitch; it’s about being present, listening, and genuinely caring about the people you work with. That mindset has shaped how I approach both my customers and my colleagues.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Network as much as possible and don’t be afraid to take a non-linear path. I didn’t land where I am today by following a straight line—I got here by reaching out to people, asking questions, and being open to opportunities that didn’t initially seem like the perfect fit. Your network can open doors you didn’t even know existed. Also, don’t count yourself out of roles like sales or tech because of preconceived notions. These fields offer incredible growth, financial independence, and the chance to build meaningful, long-term relationships.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in cybersecurity sales right now is keeping up with how quickly the threat landscape is evolving. Organizations are overwhelmed with options and often unsure where to invest. At the same time, that creates a huge opportunity—to act as a trusted advisor rather than just a salesperson. By focusing on education, transparency, and long-term partnership, we can help customers make informed decisions that truly protect their businesses.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, consistency, and connection are the values that guide me. In my work, I believe in showing up authentically, following through commitments, and building trust over time. Personally, I value maintaining strong relationships with family, friends, and mentors who have supported me throughout my journey. I’m also deeply motivated by creating stability and a comfortable life for myself—something shaped by my experiences growing up during the 2008 recession. That perspective continues to drive my work ethic and long-term goals.
