What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a lifelong dedication to education and personal growth—spending 25 years as a special needs educator, returning to the workforce with the Department of Corrections, and later transitioning into authorship. Earning my master’s degree while raising two sons and working multiple jobs, along with mentorship from a professor who recognized my writing talent, has shaped my journey and fueled my creative pursuits, including publishing two books now being considered for screen adaptations.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received came from a former superintendent who told me to “keep going,” encouraging me to persist through challenges, and from my aunt, who reminded me, “You put your pants on the same as everybody else,” grounding me in confidence and humility.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Brenda advises young women entering the writing industry to “write everything down,” believing that even the smallest ideas can grow into meaningful work.

The biggest challenges and opportunities in Brenda’s field involve navigating personal grief and life changes while transitioning from a long career in education to authorship, using these experiences to inspire and inform her writing.
