Ten minutes with Brenda
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the unwavering support of my family, friends, and the exceptional mentors who have guided and encouraged me throughout my career. Their belief in me inspired me to pursue opportunities that create meaningful impact. One of my proudest accomplishments has been partnering with Kathy Adams through the National Coalition of 100 Black Women to establish the San Francisco Bay Area chapter, where we created scholarship and workforce scholarship programs that have helped young women pursue higher education and career opportunities. During my 34-year career at Wells Fargo, I was equally proud to help demonstrate that a company can achieve strong business results while making a meaningful difference in the communities it serves. Today, I continue that commitment through my consulting practice and by serving on the boards of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, and Bailard Investment Management, where I strive to advance leadership, community investment, and lasting social impact.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've embraced is to lead with openness, authenticity, and generosity rather than viewing knowledge as something to protect. Early in my career, I realized that some people believe sharing their expertise could limit their own success, but I found the opposite to be true. By openly sharing what I've learned, mentoring others, and being transparent with my team about my approach, I've built stronger relationships, fostered trust, and developed high-performing teams. I believe that honest communication and a willingness to help others succeed create a culture where everyone can grow, collaborate, and achieve more together.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to never be afraid to ask for help and never hesitate to use your own voice. Seek out mentors, ask questions, and learn from those who have walked the path before you, but also trust your instincts and have the confidence to share your ideas and perspectives. Your unique experiences and insights are valuable, and authentic leadership comes from speaking up with courage, embracing opportunities to grow, and believing that your voice can make a meaningful difference.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field today is earning and maintaining trust in an environment where people are more skeptical than ever about the information they receive. Audiences are no longer willing to accept every message at face value, making authenticity, transparency, and credibility essential. This also presents a tremendous opportunity for leaders and organizations to communicate with purpose, tell their own stories, and build genuine connections with the communities they serve. I believe it's more important than ever to have your own voice, share your values consistently, and create messages that are honest, meaningful, and reflective of the impact you aspire to make.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my work and my personal life are family, friendship, community, integrity, honesty, and service. I believe that strong relationships are the foundation of meaningful leadership, and I strive to lead with authenticity, compassion, and a genuine commitment to helping others. Whether serving clients, mentoring future leaders, or volunteering in my community, I want people to know they can count on me. I take pride in being someone others can call at any time for guidance, support, or encouragement, and I believe that lasting success is measured not only by professional achievements but by the positive impact we have on the lives of others.
