About Brianna
Brianna Aguilar serves as an art director at Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, focusing on Nike campaigns. She began her career at Media Arts Lab immediately after completing her undergraduate studies in the advertising program at Brigham Young University, where she spent three and a half years developing her skills in creative work. In her role, she partners with her husband, who acts as her copywriter, to concept fresh and culturally relevant ideas, prepare presentation decks, and refine visual language and tone for campaigns. She draws inspiration from various sources and collaborates with creative directors, producers, and media teams to bring ideas to life. Brianna attributes much of her success to her supportive partnership with her husband and values humility, vulnerability, and openness to feedback in both her professional and personal life.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Brianna
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say my husband, as cheesy as that is, we're a team in all aspects, and he's really pushed me, and we've helped each other really to get where we are, and I honestly wouldn't have been able to do it without him.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My creative director Matt said it's convinced me that why you like this idea, maybe I'm just not seeing it the right way, or maybe it needs to be finessed and honed so I can see what you're seeing. That allowed me to go back to the drawing board and finesse it and make it better, and have the courage to go back and say hey this is my thinking of this idea and this is why I really like it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Take space. It's not being afraid to know that you should be there and you can do it. Lean into that and build relationships with the women that you see in the office because it's so empowering and great to work with women and to build relationships.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Advertising has looked one way for a long time mainly film and TV commercials and out-of-home billboards and guerrilla advertising. Now it's really changing to your phone and social media. It's been really fun to figure out how to speak to people in a different way and in a whole different medium. Social media is ever-changing and growing and it's fast.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being humble and being willing to be vulnerable. In a creative industry you are really putting your heart out on the line all the time. Being able to listen to what other people have to say because everyone has something meaningful to say and when you are humble and willing to listen and vulnerable the best work comes out of that.
