Her Story

About Britney

I've always been a helper and a nerd since I was a child. I used to play school when I was young and made flashcards because it was fun. My parents instilled in me how important education was, and my sister and I were first-generation college graduates. After taking a gap year to ensure I wanted to go to law school, I worked at a civil litigation firm before starting law school. I went to UT, where it's kind of pushed on you to go big law and do big firms to pay off your student loans. I got into commercial litigation but didn't enjoy it because I wasn't helping people on an individual basis and didn't get the client contact or courtroom experience I wanted. I took on a pro bono divorce case because the only people at the courthouse were criminal lawyers and family lawyers. I really loved it because I was able to work one-on-one with individuals, generally people who felt like they didn't have a voice. Through their divorce, I was able to give them a voice and help them move on to a better path in life. That was much more fulfilling for me. I'm more of an introvert, so I like working one-on-one and being able to control my own docket and run my own cases. My typical day involves running 100% of my own cases, lots of emails, court appearances for temporary orders hearings, mediations that can last 12 hours, drafting motions and documents, negotiating with opposing counsel, and a lot of hand-holding because family law is emotional. I have to wear both an advocate hat and a counseling hat to help clients through these issues and put out fires, like the 3 o'clock afternoon emergencies where we have to go down to the courthouse. It's a little bit different every day and you have to be ready to go.

01What do you attribute your success to?

A lot of my success is honestly just internal. I've never been a person that needs outside accolades to do well. I want to do well for myself, and I think that's just been instilled in me since I was a young child. I've always been the hyper one, even though I am the baby. My own aunt said to me, 'I look up to my niece, and I want to be like her when I grow up.' I've always had that internal drive just to do better and strive to keep learning. It's that constant desire to improve myself and continue growing that has driven my success throughout my career.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say definitely find mentors that do not work in your firm. Find someone that you admire the way that they practice and kind of latch onto them, because that's the person that you can ask the questions that you might be afraid to ask your boss. You can have confidential questions like, 'I don't know if this firm is the right place for me.' For me, I've always had external mentors, and I also love to be a mentor. I have so many mentees across the state, from high school kids to current law students and current attorneys. Having that mentor, you've got to have that right away. And also, you've got to start networking as soon as you get in the field, because every job that I've moved to has been not just because of my qualifications, but because I knew someone at that firm, and that got me in the door. When you start networking early, you get to a point where you don't have to depend on anyone to give you work. I generate 100% of my own business because of networking, and I don't depend on anybody to give me work.
