Her Story

About Brittany

Brittany Baldwin serves as an instructional designer at WGU, where she designs online courses in higher education. She earned her bachelor's degree in early childhood education and later obtained a master's degree in curriculum and instruction. Baldwin taught for 16 years, including 13 years in second grade and three years in kindergarten, before feeling stuck and burnt out. She took a significant risk by leaving teaching without a backup plan, pursued UX design certification, and worked part-time jobs while transitioning. This path led her to her current position, where she applies her expertise in technology in education and instructional design. Baldwin attributes her success to taking risks and pivoting careers, and she encourages others to explore transferable skills from teaching to thrive in new roles.

Ten minutes with Brittany

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to taking risks and pivoting from teaching after 16 years when I felt stuck and burnt out. I had no backup plan but pursued UX design certification and eventually found my dream role as an instructional designer. It was scary financially but I have no regrets and feel fulfilled using my skills in a new way.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women to explore other people's stories of leaving teaching and thriving elsewhere. Challenge the idea that if you're a teacher that's all you can do. You have great skills that are transferable outside of a classroom. Take the plunge even if it's scary because it's completely worth it and you can still use your skills in new roles.
