Her Story
About Brittany
I started my accounting career as an internal auditor for an electric supply company, where I worked for a couple of years before being laid off due to COVID. After that, I worked briefly as a general ledger accountant for a property management company for about 4 months. I was then scouted by a CPA firm in Alabama where I worked full-time for 2 years and still do contract work for them today. That's where I learned a lot of my really heavy accounting, tax, and audit experience. My current position is as a business manager for entertainers and athletes with a company based in LA that found me on LinkedIn. I've been with them for 4 years and I'm super happy with them. I work remotely from Houston and handle everything financial for my clients, from GL accounting all the way to tax return preparation. I do a lot of tax work for the CPA firm, and I'm very knowledgeable with business tax and business structures. I do extensive consulting work for my clients when they want to open new businesses or figure out how to make the most of their existing businesses. On a day-to-day basis, I go through all my clients' bank accounts making sure they are fully funded, reconciling everything daily, and handling everything from small tasks like helping a client whose credit card isn't working in Morocco to complex work like researching tax laws in other countries to ensure compliance with US tax returns. We close out the books monthly, provide clients with a rundown of everything happening, and meet with them quarterly to go over their money, budget better, make better investments, and help their money grow.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say just hard work, determination, and treating every job I've ever had as if it was the end-all, be-all. Even if I was bartending or if I had to be a janitor, I don't look at that as a right-now situation. I look at that as, hey, this is what is propelling me right now, so I'm going to give it my all. Especially with accounting, it's very client-focused, so I look at every client as if it's me. How would I want my business run? What kind of advice would I want? What is gonna make that business grow? And when I see the growth, it's almost as if my baby is growing, so I treat every client's account as if it's my own, and that level of passion definitely shows in my work, and my clients really appreciate me for it.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say just make sure that you can find someone that can mentor you, and take that CPA exam very seriously. We call it the CPA can't pass again. Once you're done with it, you are done, and that is going to open so many doors in this profession. So getting that CPA certification is very important. And then also, look at public accounting as a gateway to whatever else you want to do, because public accounting is going to teach you such a wide net of everything that you can do, so then you will be exposed to everything, and then you can pick what you like and take that route.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
For my industry right now, since I work in entertainment, a lot of the things that are happening in Hollywood, with them switching over how their pay structures are, a lot of our clients are losing their overall deals, so they're having some financial crunches, which is putting stress on my company. But we are finding ways to get through it. We're still very healthy and very strong. When you see those strikes and things happening, they do affect my industry currently, but we're still a very strong company. We still have the sports side that we work with, and my personal clients are doing very well.
