Brittany Onken
I began my career in sales nearly 15 years ago, but life changed quickly when I saw my husband overwhelmed by the operational demands of the lawn care business he had launched right out of high school. I knew I could make a meaningful impact, so I stepped away from my sales career and joined him in what would become our family business.
At the time, the company was generating roughly $200,000 in annual revenue. In my first year, we scaled to $600,000. Over the next 12 years, my husband and I grew our lawn care and snow removal operation into a million‑dollar enterprise before selling off the service contracts. We retained our brand and team and pivoted to build a tree‑care company from the ground up. Within three years, that business also surpassed the million‑dollar mark.
When my husband became sick and we felt it was time for a new chapter, we made the decision to sell. To our surprise, the valuation exceeded expectations, and we ultimately had a very sucessful exit. That experience opened an unexpected door: I was recruited by Sunbelt Business Advisors and True North M&A—the largest business brokerage and M&A firm in the country. Their interview process is known for being highly selective, so earning a place on their team was a tremendous honor.
Today, I help business owners—especially those in the trades and green industry—understand the true value of what they’ve built and navigate the complex, emotional process of exiting their companies. Too many tradespeople underestimate the worth of their brand, their systems, and their legacy. A successful transition takes time; our deal came with plenty of highs, lows, and tough decisions. Now, I guide entrepreneurs through that same journey so they can achieve a successful exit and confidently step into their Life 2.0.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute so much of my success to the strength of my support system. My husband and I have always operated as a true team, and having a partner who believes in you, challenges you, and stands with you through every season makes all the difference. The right business partner doesn’t just share the workload — they shape the trajectory of your life and career. He has always been that steady force for me.
I’ve also learned the importance of choosing mentors intentionally. In a world full of competing agendas and personalities, surrounding yourself with people who genuinely want to see you win is essential. The right mentors elevate you, protect your blind spots, and help you grow. Being selective about who you allow into your inner circle is one of the most powerful decisions you can make as a leader and entrepreneur.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to keep your eyes on the horizon and continue moving forward. There is always work to be done, and consistent effort truly does pay off — I’ve witnessed that truth again and again. As a business owner, and now as someone stepping into a new industry, there are moments that feel uncertain or even intimidating. But maintaining a sense of hope is essential. Progress often comes down to mindset: believing that challenges are temporary, opportunities are ahead, and your persistence will carry you through.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My biggest advice to young women entering the business broker space is to build a network that supports you. Surround yourself with mentors that will open doors, challenge your thinking and help you avoid pitfalls. Develop thick skin without losing your voice. You'll encounter strong personalities, skepticism, and sometimes bias. Don't shrink yourself to fit the room. Hold your ground, stay professional and let your results speak for you. Respect is earned through performance. Let your results do the talking. And last, play the long game. Deals take time, relationships take time and your career takes time. Stay focused on the horizon, keep moving forward and don't let temporary challenges shake your long-term vision.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The core values I hold closest—both personally and professionally—are rooted in powerful partnerships and loyalty. I believe deeply in the strength of true partnership. Whether in business or at home, having people who stand with you, challenge you, and support your growth is foundational. Loyalty and teamwork have shaped every major milestone in my life and career.
Integrity and transparency are equally essential. Honesty is non‑negotiable, and I value clear, straightforward communication in every relationship and every decision.
Hope and mindset also play a significant role in how I approach my work and my life. Mindset drives outcomes. I believe in staying hopeful, looking ahead, and trusting that challenges are temporary. A positive, forward‑thinking mindset has carried me through every transition and new chapter.
