Her Story

About Brittany

Brittany Ruland is a political consultant, strategic political executive, coalition builder, and business leader who has been active in the political field since 2015. In her current consulting work, she partners with local candidates across Iowa and advises larger political organizations, providing strategic guidance and organizational support to campaigns and groups that may not have the resources to maintain full-time staff. With extensive experience in grassroots organizing, political strategy, and coalition development, Brittany has built a reputation for helping organizations strengthen their operations, connect with communities, and advance their goals effectively.

Brittany’s professional journey has been shaped largely by hands-on experience rather than a traditional college education. She has developed her expertise by asking questions, learning from experienced professionals, and continually expanding her knowledge through real-world challenges and opportunities. She attributes much of her success to her determination and resilience, as well as the encouragement of her husband, his family, and close friends. Their support helped her navigate the challenges of being a single mother working minimum-wage jobs and ultimately build the confidence to overcome imposter syndrome while taking on significant political responsibilities, including working with U.S. Senators and contributing to the effort that helped elect the president in 2020.

Driven by her children and grounded in a strong belief in the value of every individual, Brittany approaches leadership with authenticity, compassion, and determination. She believes in treating people with humanity and ensuring that individuals feel seen and respected, even during their most difficult moments. Her advice to young women entering the political industry is to be vocal, speak up, stand firmly in their power, and remain authentic, while never compromising their principles or accepting injustice. Through her leadership, advocacy, and commitment to empowering others, Brittany continues to demonstrate the impact of perseverance, courage, and authentic leadership.

Ten minutes with Brittany

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of determination, resilience, and the people who believed in my potential. My stubbornness has pushed me to keep moving forward, even when the path was difficult, while my husband, his family, and close friends provided the encouragement and support I needed, particularly when I was a single mother working minimum-wage jobs. Their belief in me helped me overcome imposter syndrome and recognize that I belonged in rooms with experienced leaders, including U.S. Senators. Being part of efforts that contributed to electing the president in 2020 reinforced my confidence and showed me what is possible when I remain persistent, surround myself with people who lift me up, and continue to believe in my own abilities.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to stay focused on building meaningful relationships, supporting others, and remaining grounded in ethics and integrity. My long-term aspiration is to run for public office, but right now, I am focused on collaborating with organizations, building strong connections, and providing comprehensive support for their initiatives. I believe effective leadership begins with putting people first and making decisions that prioritize human well-being. I also see technology, including artificial intelligence, as a valuable tool that can be used thoughtfully and responsibly to strengthen our work and create better outcomes. Ultimately, I want my career to reflect purpose, integrity, and a genuine commitment to creating positive change.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the political industry is to be loud, speak up, and stand confidently in your power. There have been many times when I was the only woman in a senior leadership room surrounded by men with more than 30 years of experience, and those experiences taught me the importance of recognizing and owning the value I bring to the table. Women bring tremendous strength, perspective, and value to this industry, and we should never feel the need to hide those qualities. Be authentic, trust your voice, and have the courage to challenge injustice when you have the ability to make a difference.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field right now is navigating the intense political tension and heightened risks that come with public-facing political work, including death threats and hostile messages. These challenges extend beyond me personally, as I also have to consider the safety and well-being of my family while continuing to do meaningful work. At the same time, I see a tremendous opportunity to help create a healthier and more inclusive political environment where the next generation feels safe, confident, and empowered to participate. I believe it is important to continue showing up, leading with courage, and helping make these spaces more welcoming for those who want to contribute to positive change.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My children are my greatest driving force, and they inspire me to lead with purpose, compassion, and integrity. I value humanity and believe in seeing and respecting people for who they are, especially during their most difficult moments. Because we work in a people-centered environment, I recognize that every decision we make can have an impact on those around us, and I strive to approach each decision with empathy and consideration. My family, genuine relationships, and passion for creating meaningful change continue to motivate me both personally and professionally.
